Morning, has anyone got any advice please on treating, long curly, obviously thin now and few bold spots on top. I finished my 6th chemo now 3 days ago. I had the cold cap and it thankfully worked but lost t around 50%of my hair. Any advice on shampoos, conditioners, oils?

Many thanks Two hearts

  • I didn't cold cap and now have lovely hair growing back in and because it is brand new, I have not washed it with shampoo once, just a deep conditioner twice a week and it is in really great condition! I think less is more with hair ,especially if yours is lovely and curly.

Before cancer and chemo, I had switched to natural shampoos and conditioners and found they really improved my hair (mine is quite wavy and it became far less dry with more defined waves). I would think anything paraben/SLS free would be a good bet - and it doesn't need to cost the earth. I tried Faith in Nature amongst others and they have a great range for different hair types and smell divine!

I currently also use a L'oreal ultimate blends leave in conditioner (it's natural) and it's great for keeping everything defined when otherwise it would be very fluffy on my head as it is still so short.

Hello Beattgebreast. I’m new to this forum so apologies for late reply. My daughter who is a hairdresser has recommended I use a product called NIOXIN. It’s specifically targets hair loss/thinning by stimulating the scalp to allow hair to recover-grow quicker and thicker. It’s quite pricey but effective. Good luck.

  • Hi COYG, thanks for your reply.

Nioxin has loads of chemicals in it, including SLS and other sodiums which just dry my hair out. I find the fewer ingredients, and the more natural, the better for my hair. I tried nioxin years ago as my hair was thinning due to medication at the time, and I didn't find it helped and left my hair feeling coarse. Having gone SLS and paraben free, I now know that those chemicals are not good for my wavy hair type.

It may work well for others though!

I have to say, I haven't found any issue with my hair after chemo, it is growing in just as thick as before (I have thin hair but lots of it) and the same colour, so I am really pleased.

    Hi lovely

i used the ogx range (purple bottle) and it was great for my thinning hair when it first started to grow back. 5 years later I’m still using the same brand xxx

    Hi Hbp

I had the cold cap & managed to keep enough hair to not need a wig. However when the new hair started to grow back it did push out the hair I had saved. It’s a year since I finished chemo although I’ve still been on herceptin, but I now have a really thick curly mop of hair (it was fine & straight before!) I am beginning to really like it & my hairdresser tells me it’s the best I’ve ever had! I use normal shampoos but not much heat on it - but just to add a positive note it may be even better than before so hold on xxx
