Hello all, have read several threads that I have found very helpful, so many common thoughts and emotions. I was diagnosed with high grade  DCIS a month ago. I kept wanting to say “ you’ve got the wrong person!”. I retired last November and everything was going great until I was recalled after a routine mammogram. Was very shocked and anxious. Now feel resigned to the process and hubby very sensibly said you should be grateful it was found so early.( His sister died 3 yrs at 59 of breast cancer).

I have two sites in right breast. Am having wires inserted tomorrow and surgery on Tuesday. Expect to have radiotherapy in Sept/Oct.

Have had to cancel 3 holidays. Have any of you been away between op and radiotherapy? How did you feel? We have cancelled a staycation cruise at the end of August.

Regards

Di

  • Hi Diane, I also had DCIS in 2013, high grade, I had some of my milk ducts removed and a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy. At the time I had a 4 year old. I didn’t leave the country in between but I did have a holiday and I was fine. I also had a weekend away actually during radiotherapy and that was fine too. I’d strongly suggest speaking to your nurses about it but I can reassure you that  whilst I was sore for a couple of weeks I was generally ok. We are all different of course and my experience may not be yours but overall I felt relatively healthy throughout once I’d gotten over the initial operation. All the very best of luck to you x

  • Thank you Anna, I was hoping that would be the case. If all is OK at my post op visit ie, they have removed all the cancer cells I will book a short break. How soon after the op did you have radiotherapy?

  • It was quite a gap, I’m pretty sure I had the surgery in April/May (apologies for my memory) and I know I had the radiotherapy in august because my daughter started school two weeks after I finished! I went to Zakinthos the week after radiotherapy and was fine but you can not expose any area that has recent radiotherapy to the sun so I had to wear t shirts in the pool, etc.

  • Hi Di

Firstly I hope that your surgery went well and that you are doing as well as you can at the moment.

I was also recalled following a routine mammogram with high grade DCIS and had surgery in my left breast on 10th May. The time between surgery and the follow up appointment is a difficult time, so many worries and emotions.

While your hubby is right, it has been caught early, thank god for screening!), it is still OK that you feel the way you do.

I had my appointment with the radiologist at the start of June and I spoke with them about  a staycation I had booked in mid June, they were more than happy to delay the start of my radiotherapy so that I could enjoy my break. I started my treatment on 24th June.

The break did me the world of good , it was so lovely to be away from the house and to have a period,  albeit short, that I could have a little bit of normality in the middle of the journey.

I returned to work this week and am looking forward to another break in September.

I am sorry that you had to cancel your planned holiday but even a few days away is good for the sole.

  •  Thank you Isabel. I am doing fine in terms of healing but have developed a Seroma, disconcerting swishing sound in certain positions. Have left a message for the BCN.

will let you know how I get on at my post op appt and where we book a break !
