I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on Friday 23rd, dissolvable stitches and glue, no dressings no drains. Had no contact with any Breast care nurse and no real instructions as to what to do now, the nurse who discharged me just said look out for redness or infection. Have a bath not a shower and that was it, I wasn’t given a prescription for painkillers as I can’t take codeine and said I didn’t need to wear my bra to bed, as they like air to get to the glue. I don’t even know whether I have another appointment to check it, other than in 4 weeks when I see the surgeon again. I just wondered whether this was normal.
She also said I need to continue to isolate which was a surprise to me as no one had said before, although it makes perfect sense, but how long for because she didn’t tell me that.
Thanks
Diane
Hi there. Well done for getting through surgery. I found that the big hurdle. I think it very much depends on hospital and how they do things. I was told to wear bra day and night for 6 -12 weeks but sometimes it's so uncomfy. Not sure if its cos I'm an FF cup on my 5ft frame! Shower hits your back so don't soak under shower or in bath. Pat dry with separate towel. I too was glued with dissolvable stitches inside. Dressings could come off after 72 hours. Steri strips would come off in time by themselves. For me the stick was the worst as it was in my armpit. I got post with more leaflets and more exercises. Did get a call from physio as no classes due to covid. I have a breast nurse but up to me to ring them, they didn't ring me. You should have access to one so make use if you need. I got my results by phone a couple of weeks later and next contact would be may next year for mammogram. Been passed to another hospital for radiotherapy as they don't have facilities. Wasn't told to isolate but I think wise to be cautious ie no large groups, not near people who have colds, masks in supermarkets etc. I think use your common sense on what you feel like doing. Take one day at a time x
Hi Tiredmineon, I have a large chest too at 34g, this is why I was wondering whether I should have been told to wear one, the nurse that discharged me was surprised the breast care nurses hadn’t come to see me at any time and said she’d leave a message for them, as she didn’t really know what to tell me. She told me to ring the ward on Monday and that she would leave them a message. I was so confident to start with that I was in very good hands, but then they gave me the wrong time for the wire to be inserted, my letter said that my isotope injection was at 11 on Friday when it was at 10 and then had the worry of going up to the ward early, although that worked out great because I had a room with air conditioning and a bathroom all to my self, I had no dressings even coming from theatre, so that’s kind of freaked me out because I feel there’s no padding for protection.
On a positive note my surgeon is fantastic, just need to know what to do next.
Anyway will phone ward tomorrow and try and find out and if I get no sense I’ll phone the breast care nurse from the assessment centre as I have her number.
My radiotherapy is in a different hospital too, it’s in the Cancer hospital in Cardiff as they have specialist equipment there.
Thanks for replying
Big hugs
Diane
When I saw the surgeon there was another lady from Nightingale Centre which is where I am under. She came to see me after surgery. My breast care nurse is a bit wishy washy for me and not helpful so I usually phone them if I have a question on the days she's not in. I found that wearing bra although uncomfy is supportive as been sleeping on my back. If I sleep on good side I wake up feeling like my boob has been a bit pulled and is very achy. Hope you get some helpful answers. Keep going xx
