hi everyone, I was hoping for some advice, I have had a bilateral mammoplasty with wle for lobular and nst cancer plus sentinel node biopsy. Unfortunately 2 of my margins are too close so need more surgery. I can’t decide on letting them do a further wle or just going for mastectomy. I have an appointment with the plastic surgeon to determine if immediate reconstruction would be possible with diep flap. Just feel it must be very difficult for them to know exactly where the margins are so many weeks after original surgery. I’m having chemo at the moment and need radio after surgery. I really would like to get all the surgery done snd not need to think about reconstruction down the line. Or maybe I should just accept being flat!!! Aaahhhh does anyone have any similar experience. Sorry to go on a bit !!! Tia
HI
Dropping you a note as saw you had no replies, my situation not too disimilar - I had no choice but to have a mx and, due to the fact I was having rads afterwards was flat for 9 months, I achieved symmetry using softies and knitted knockers ( got my prosthesis a week before my DIEP...thanks NHS!).
I also had a WLE on the other side which has a large dint but looks fine in a bra.
I'm obviously not you but I was fine with the wait....however it was short as I purposefully decided to go private (had insurance through work and was aware waiting times on NHS can be lengthy). I'm aware of lots of ladies who prefer the immediate option given the wait.
I'll send you a private message of a social media site that will have lots of ladies who will have had experiences similar to you, you may want to ask there.
Good luck
Sam
Hi
Not the same but I had an invasive lump , and a Wle , which uncovered extensive DCIS which hadn’t shown up on any scans - no clear margin. My surgeon had to go in blind as such as there was nothing visible to see , two further ops and still no clear margins. I had chemo and then a mastectomy with an implant , followed 2 1/2 yrs later with a DIEP flap.
I was glad to have the mastectomy in the end , but just be aware that however great the reconstruction is (and mine is fab) they are not real and there is very little, if any sensation. It has taken me a while to properly get over losing my breast , so if there is a chance to keep yours , I would give it another go. Also you don’t have to be flat , an implant can be an interim measure (as mine was) If you can’t have an immediate DIEP, the waiting lists are now very long in most places , years , so also be aware of that.
Good luck with your decision,
Jo x
Thanks for your reply Jo. You having given me some food for thought. I suppose given one more shot at margins would maybe worth while for the quick recovery and mx after if not clear as defo couldn’do a 3rd go. I think cause I need radiation that an implant wouldn’t be suitable. Thanks again
