Breast injury that caused a bruise , 3 weeks on found a lump whilst lying down so had mama-gram yesterday but then they wanted me to have a ultrasound , on the positive side all lymph nodes normal but doctor thought the lump looked suspicious , not like a cyst or heamatoma and not connected to breast injury so I was getting up to leave then she suggested a biopsy !!! A what I said ? I calmed down snd knew I had to have it , my 30 min  appointment became 1 and half hours ,results in two weeks but in my head surely it is cancer ? It’s in my family though , my Nan, my aunt , my mum and sis all had it , I feel upset and angry but I must pull myself together mustn’t I ?

  • Hello,

I am sorry you find yourself here. There is still a chance the biopsy will be negative but I do think the doctors that perform the biopsies have a good idea when they take cancer so perhaps it is good to mentally prepare yourself for the possibility.

You didn't say if your family members had successful treatments but treatments are progressing all the time and many breast cancers are successfully removed and don't return. You must tell yourself that you were lucky that the doctors you saw yesterday was so thorough. Cancers found early can be dealt with more easily than those that weren't noticed.

As for how you feel.....on this site we have felt every possible emotion. You can rant, cry, laugh, ....there will always be someone around to listen, to offer help if you ask a question or simply share your treatment because they are in a similar situation. Hopefully you will find all the support you need.

The next two weeks of waiting will be difficult. Distract yourself by doing nice things if you can. I had a holiday booked and doctors encouragd me to take it. I couldn't completely forget the results I was waiting for but there were times that I did enjoy the break. If you want to chat anytime of day or night go to Awake on the chat line. Often people are up in the night or will chat to you early morning. Don't google. It will frighten you unnecessarily as it is often out of date. Ask your questions on Macmillan or the NHS.

Finally my own cancer was in 2015. It has not returned. There are a number of people on the Awake thread in a similar sitution. Hopefully it will help reassure you that BC can be successfully treated these days.

Keep in touch however you are feeling. Take care. Love Karen

    Hello Karen

my Nan, My mum, my aunt all died of their breast cancers but my sister is fine but it’s her birthday tomorrow , she never contacted me yesterday and I don’t want to spoil her birthday with negativity as I was with her every step of the way , I drove  her home when she was told and she cursed our mum ( whom was not kind to us when we were little ) my sister also said why me and not you and my other sister but I understood , and did think well it could be us as you never know , and we are on holiday my wonderful husband and I ( West Wales )

  • Last year in February 2020 my sister was diagnosed with bc too. She got her op just before lockdown and was told she didn't need further treatment except Tamoxifen.  She still seems ok although I have always had a slight worry that the pandemic may have interfered with her treatment.

It's strange how even without a genetic link these things run in families. Our paternal grandmother survived her bc for 13 years and died of something unrelated and we have a cousin who is fine now having had bc in 2014.

I know you are worried but I'm glad you are waiting to tell your sister until you definitely know but I'm sure you can both be optimistic about the future.

Enjoy your holiday. Wales is beautiful.
