I have been offered a lumpectomy, depending on a second area that showed up on my MRI, biopsies were taken on this and I get the results on Wednesday. I have been reading up on this and if they don't take enough of the healthy tissue around the tumour it can come back. I'm very unsure of what to do.

  • Hello,

I don't know what article you have read but I think it maybe worrying you unnecessarily.  Yes, you are right. If the margins are not clear, cancer can return BUT did your article say that after the lumpectomy the tissue is analysed. If the margins are not clear, a second operation is performed to remove a wider margin. Unfortunately if it still isn't satisfactory a mastectomy might be needed. There are one or two contributors on here who had that solution to the problem. Hopefully they will see your post and tell you about it.

There are two issues here. If a lumpectomy is possible, it is much neater and easier to deal with particularly if it is done well. My scar is very neat and barely visible. The operation is much shorter and recovery qucker too. Secondly, it is unlikely that any surgeon will knowingly leave you with cancer cells.

So I suggest you wait for the final biopsy results....a lumpectomy might not be possible anyway if there is too much cancer, discuss with the surgeon what he thinks is your best choice and then trust that whatever the outcome, the surgeon will not leave you with cancer cells. He will look for a means to remove them.

Hope all goes well for you. My lumpectomy was nearly six years ago. Everything is still clear.

    Love Karen
