Hello

I started my first cycle of EC chemo on 30 June the side effects have been bad and I have already ended up in Hospital. I'm just looking for any advice regarding tongue and mouth problems my tongue is so sore feels enlarged but it isn't  and feels like it has hundreds of cuts on it,  it really hurts to speak. The Hospital has given me two types of mouth wash but nothing helps with the pain. Anyone else have similar problems and can suggest anything that would help with the pain?  if you have found something that helps you I would really appreciate any suggestions Thank you xx

GOOD NEWS UPDATE :  I was given a tip by a fellow Cancer Traveller take 1/2 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and dissolve in small amount of water and gargle before eating throughout the day OMG it works and has really relieved the pain so I'm sharing with anyone who reads this.

  • Hi. I m sorry to hear about your side effects. I also started my first chemo in June. I have read that sucking on ice cubes helps with pain but also they can prescribe products with lidocaine to numb your mouth so it doesn't feel that painful. Mouthwash helps to prevent infections but can be useless if u are in pain. Chat to your chemo nurse, I m sure they can help. Love Aga x

Hi there. I had exactly the same thing with my tongue and mouth after my FEC treatments AND my Docetaxel treatments. I had a few mouth ulcers as well. I think the painful burning mouth, swollen tongue, and throbbing gums were the worst side effects for me.

I asked for help with the pain, as ice and ice lollies weren’t helping. They gave me dispersible aspirin which I had to dissolve in a small amount of water, and then had to mix it with raspberry mucilage that they prescribed for me. I’m not sure what the mucilage was for exactly—either to mask the taste of the aspirin, or coat the area, as I did some googling on it, and it seems like it is frequently used as a coating agent. I found that it did help quite a bit, as opposed to the Benzydamine (green stuff, and I think that’s the spelling!).

Maybe try rinsing and gargling with dispersible aspirin dissolved in water, even without the raspberry stuff, if you don’t have any? They told me not to swallow it, just rinse and spit it out.

I hope this helps and that you get some relief.
