Hi,

have finished my chemo for breast cancer (FEC treatment)  had MRI scan which now shows my breast lump is only 8mm - it was called an almost complete response to the chemo, on my first ultrasound scan of my lymph nodes under arm 5 were shown to be abnormal - had biopsy one lymph node shown cancer,  my surgeon who l saw on Monday give me results of my latest MRI scan, which was has she said good news , the surgeon said she would do left wide excision on my left breast - there is 8mm of mild enhancement  at the site of the marker clip where the lump was, she also said axillary lymph node clearance under left arm pit, l asked if the scan showed any swelling or abnormalities of the lymph nodes - she said no, so l asked could l have say 3 to 5 lymph nodes biopsy to see if the chemo has gone from them, l was  told once cancer is found in lymph node it’s normal ( even after chemo) to have axillary lymph node clearance, my breast care nurse spoke to me on the phone yesterday l said about my concerns having so many lymph nodes removed when may be the chemo had killed the cancer in them, the nurse said l would be discussed at the MD meeting today, my surgery is due on Friday l went for ( pre op) yesterday, the nurse will phone me tomorrow, l would like to ask any ladies reading this if you questioned about lymph node removal and what happened?,  sending my best wishes to all who read this.

  • Hi I had a full lymph node clearance/ lumpectomy before chemo I had all 24 nodes out and for me I wanted them gone. Post op results showed cancer in them so I was relieved. Then went on to have chemo and rads as ' belt and braces' . I never questioned node removal as I just wanted them out, but I have heard some people prefer other options xxx

Hi - just saw your post and am in a similar situation. Had lymph involvement from the start, but docs said to do chemo first and then lumpectomy to hopefully kill activity in lymphs. I had my lumpectomy and they removed 3 lymph’s, all still contained cancer cells. Booked in for second op for full clearance. How did you get on? X

Just saw your post. On my initial breast scan they found an 8 mm lump, which even the surgeon had trouble finding. They did the biopsy in June last year.  In July they rescanned and found the lump was 37mm but the lymph nodes were negative, so in August they removed the lump and one lymph node to test it - the amount they removed was 42mm plus their safety margin and the lymph node was cancerous too - stage 3 cancer, which they wanted to attack first with chemo, then tackle lymph glands afterwards, hoping the chemo may get to them first. They referred me for 6 sessions of chemo which ended late Jan then the lymph removal was carried out last week - when I asked about the under arm lymph nodes my specialist stated people can have anything between 5 and 40 of them under the arm… she was going to remove however many I had! Have to wait for results now - 4-6 weeks and will then be referred for further treatment (radiotherapy?). In meantime the chemo has affected my heart rate (dropped from 55% to 45%) so they’re monitoring that - have heart scan tomorrow to see if they can carry out an injection involved with chemo, as it affects the heart rate,. or whether I have to wait until I’ve seen a heart specialist - have just been told I’m on the waiting list for that so heaven knows how long that will take!.
