Hello,

I have just had a lumpectomy and two lymph nodes removed. I am awaiting results.  I am experiencing the most awful feeling under my arms and around  my chest.  It feels like my skin is extremely chaffed but there is no chaffing. My breast care nurse said it is the nerves and to take paracetamol and use a hot water bottle.  Does anyone else have any suggestions.  I am off work at the moment but can't really walk around with a hot water bottle under my arm when I'm back.  It is getting me down more than the actual operation did Slight frown

  • I had lumpectomy and 5 lymph nodes removed. It does get better, it's just time. Use a pillow under your arm in bed and take paracetamol is best advice I was given and try to find some way to take your mind off it (not easy!)

It worked for me so hopefully you will be better soon. It takes time to clear your head but you will get there, I took at least 6 months but now it has stopped taking over my life.

Take care and be as optimistic as you can!

Thank you for your reply.  I am a very impatient patient I'm afraid.  Will take your advice.  Take care x

    Hello Z67,

Yes, I had the same. I had sharp twinges & a kind of tearing sensation whenever I changed lying positions. Also a feeling of intense itching from skin on skin, or even the unbearably light touch of fabric. For me, neither heat nor cold pads relieved it.
I agree that supporting the arm on the side of the breast & node surgery can help some, as well as lying in a more upright position. I tried not to use the strong painkillers because they gave me constipation, instead I just relied on paracetamol.
Really, just gentle stretches & allowing yourself time to heal is the only path to take. Though, I did also try taking an antihistamine before bed at night, which for me, did seem to take the edge off of the nerve pain enough to provide some relief (it can also make you drowsy, aiding in getting to sleep)

Hopefully you are doing much better now a few days on. Regardless, I thought perhaps I’d throw my experience into the mix to see if it helps you or anyone still going through those tough first days.

Believe that you’ll feel better soon,

    KiwiK

Thank you so much for your reply.  That is very interesting I normally take antihistamine as I have a few allergies but I haven't been taking since the op. Will try one tonight and see if it makes a difference. It is definitely easing I thought I was going mad last week x
