Breast cancer question

I know three women who have had breast cancer, been cured, and died of it ten or so years later.

I don’t know if I have the gene or am at higher risk. My grandma had it but died of a stroke. But. If I just had the puppies removed, would it actually prevent the cancer and all that goes with it?

I like having boobs. But I also like the idea of being alive into old age. I’m done having kids so I don’t need to nurse a baby. They have reconstruction surgery that looks pretty damn good.

Aside from medical bills suck and all survey has risks, what is the actual downside of having cancer prone parts removed preemptively?

I’m white. Overweight and 37 if that makes a difference to the calculus.

  • Hi rosem53, I'm no expert and only recently diagnosed.  When I was given my options of lumpectomy vs mastectomy with my surgeon advising lumpectomy I asked him the question you are asking.  Basically wouldn't it be safer just to have a mastectomy?  His answer was that a mastectomy wouldn't guarantee that the cancer didn't re occur.  There was a lot to digest that day so I didn't ask for an explanation.

Make sure you examine your breasts and see a doctor if you notice anything suspicious as the earlier it's caught the better. No point having a mastectomy if you don't have cancer and if God forbid you ever do you can have it surgically removed either as a lumpectomy or a mastectomy.

Speak to your GP if this is making you anxious.

    Hope this helps.
