Hi All,

I was diagnosed with BC last May . I’ve had chemo, then a lumpectomy with all my nodes removed and just finished radiotherapy. My body feels like it has taken a battering and although I can do my arm and shoulder exercises the rest of my body feels wrecked , mostly very stiff , trying to get up from a chair ( even after sitting fir just 5 minutes!) is like a marathon.

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a link /video to help with overall building up of strength/stamina that would help ?
I’m also on Letrozole and Isobandronuc (?) and I think one of the possible side effects is stiffness of the joints .
many ideas greatly appreciated.
thank you

  • Hi HJen4 welcome to the forum and sorry to hear how difficult things are for you. They never seem to tell you about all the bits and pieces that occur after all the treatment  is past so some of it takes us unawares. You are right when you say about the Letrozole and painful and stiff joints its a known side effect of the drugs and one that doesn't always go away unfortunately.

I cant think of any videos or dvds but I do know that walking is the best all round exercise for us all and helps with the stiffness and keeps us supple and builds strength as well as helping keep our mood up and feeling physically well.

Good luck and hope you enjoy some lovely quiet walks let us know if it helps. xxxx

  • Hi I am nowhere near the end of my treatment yet but I can understand that by the end everyone must feel as if they have really been through the mill and for many people exercise is probably the last thing they want to think about. However, every medic I have spoken to has stressed 'exercise, exercise, exercise' as being the key to recovering from surgery and treatments and to staying healthy afterwards. I totally agree with about walking - the best all round exercise, suitable for anyone and everyone can gradually walk further as their strength improves. And getting out into the open air is so good for the mood, even when the weather isn't great.

If you fancy giving something else a go, yoga is fantastic. There are huge numbers of free yoga sessions on YouTube and many are suitable for beginners. I would suggest perhaps trying a chair-based yoga practice first - these are designed for people who may be less active or stiff - and then you can move on from there in time. As with walking, the mental health benefits of yoga are great.

Good luck and I hope that you find something that helps to build your strength, stamina and mood.

  • Hi Granny59, many thanks for your reply .
yes I think it is the Letrozole that’s making me feel so unfit ( although I was very weak after having a variety of side effects with chemo) it feels a bit like my body is just saying “ ok enough of all this treatments , no more !” I have been trying to walk a bit and been counting my steps ( I have an app on my phone which is good) I’m now up to an average of 3,000 a day but some days it’s much less.
    oh well. Onward and upward

thank you so much for your support .

  • Hi Patsy, many thanks for your reply.
Im sure you’ll be glad when you reach the end of it. Yes I do need to exercise if I can ( I’m even thinking of getting some sort of treadmill/cross trainer thing!) we have all just been out in lockdown again although I think we can go out for exercise so that should be fine . I was so weak, when trying to just walk up the street a wee bit I could barely get up or down a kerb . I’m a bit better now . Yoga sounds good if I can sit and do it , I’ve avoided it thinking I couldn’t get down on the floor ( or get up !) but seated might work , thank you fir that tip. I’ll have a wee look online.
good luck with the rest of your treatment and thank you so much for your support .

Hi Jen4, I was going to post a similar request for exercise suggestions at the weekend but hadn’t gotten round to it!

Like you I’ve gradually been building up my steps and continuing with my arm and shoulder exercises but I now feel I want to do more. I’m looking in to yoga  as I used to do this regularly years ago. YouTube can be overwhelming with suggestions but I came across Yoga with Adriene when I was looking for something gentle for my back.

(Since having surgery I’ve found my back muscles to be really tight and it’s been playing on my mind). Some days I feel things have improved then others, it seems the cold makes my scars ache more, I feel so uncomfortable again. Like every one says it’s a matter of time, but trying helps the mind at least!

    Take care x
