Help, I’m a bit bamboozeled by the site - it’s changed since I was last here don’t know if I am in the right place.
Anyway, having major bout of scanxiety. Had breast cancer 12 years ago, surgery, rads, chemo, herceptin, tamoxifen/anastrozole. Had to have DEXA scans for bone density. Never a problem.
Now on steroids for polymyalgia so still having DEXA scans and this is where the freak out comes - the GP called to “discuss” the results. She said my bone density was normal 4 times but then said it showed a loss of height at L4 in the lumber vertebral bone. Then she asked if I had experienced any trauma or accident - No is the answer.
she says I have to have an X-ray and wait for an appointment to come through but then the call ended.
of course I have now thought of stacks of questions to ask her but I can’t get another phone appointment for two weeks!
guess where my mind has gone - and no one to talk to
always found this site helpful in the past just for a bit of safe space
thanks for reading
Hi AMSML,
Sorry to hear about this, I can certainly relate to when you talk about the experience of the doctor saying they want to talk to you - I got that after an x-ray that essentially diagnosed my spinal issues but still had to wait to see a consultant to get the definitive answer.
If is of course possible to damage bones with quite small issues - I broke a rib just by coughing, so it is quite likely just to be an issue that you might not have noticed in the past and would not have been picked up but for the scan. Hopefully it is something of nothing or something that can be easily fixed but there is always that little voice at the back of our heads - does it help though because whatever it is no amount of worrying will change it.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Hi AMSML welocme to the forum and I am sorry that you find yourself here again but glad also that you have found us as you say that you were here before.and yes you are in the right place.
There have been some changes to the site since you were last here and it seems to be working well although not everyone shares my feelings on that!!!! The new site offers much betters stability than the last one did and the site can be better upgraded to keep up with changes in Cancer treatments and services etc. I appreciate that as this is new it will seem somewhat different for you and hope that you manage to make your way around to get the support that you wish. Please do let me know if you have any issues.
I wonder if this is to do with the maybe the start of Osteoporosis or Osteoarthritis rather than anything more sinister? I can relate and understand why you are anxious and you wouldn't be normal if you didn't feel like that especially with the history that you give. I have had issues with my hips recently and my back and like you had normal dexa scans but I've just found out that 3 years later I have Osteoarthritis in both hips but I confess i did wonder when the pain first started.
Im wondering if you might like to post in Ask the Nurse any queries that you might have or just stay here and post as much as you like. Im inserting a link for you to the Ask a Nurse thread and you need only click on that to take you there.
Dearest AMSML,
First of all calm down, don't panic, upsetting yourself and worrying won't help you - it will just rob you of your energy and drain you.
Now then, you are not on your own in feeling bamboozled with the new layout to the site nearly all of us are having problems in knowing where to post, with so many categories it could be anywhere - I would say post where you feel comfortable and hopefully we will find you Hopefully
our lovely Macmillan Team will see how confusing the site as become since the new layout and let us go back to the straightforward style we all know.
There could be lots innocent reasons this as shown up, especially as you have already had 4 normal bone scans, I know its easy for me to say try not to worry, but, please do try not to worry. I will tag Snowys Mum into this post, I remember Snowys Mum went though something similar and was so worried - thankfully all turned out fine, I can't fully remember what happened, Snowys Mum may even be able to help you with some of your concerns.
In the meantime we are all here for you and any worries you have just post away and between us I am sure we can help you.
If you find you are having problems sleeping there is a thread in the ' Ongoing discussions' area called "AWAKE...." - there is alway forum members dropping in and out at any time of the day or night - Ill try and put a link here to the thread (bear with me) - okay, here goes....
