I am 54 and have been diagnosed with breast cancer Grade 3 Her2 negative ER weakly positive 3 lymph nodes involved.I have been classed as eligible for the Optima trial. If I opt to participate I will have a single mastectomy before Christmas and then depending what group I am assigned to potentially chemotherapy. My dilemma is am I at a disadvantage having surgery first and then chemotherapy or just forget the trial and have chemotherapy first. I am not interested at all in preserving my breast . Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Hi,
a decision you only can take, to be honest; but if it would help, my choice was a mastectomy first and it turned out that was all I needed apart from oestrogen reducing meds for 5 years, my surgeon said I was low risk.
my advice would be to make pro and con lists and see whether that might help you decide? What about your family? Can they help you by listening to your arguments both ways?

If you are being considered for the Optima trial (which I'm taking part in) then you will be ER+, HER2- and would have surgery first normally. Have they said chemo first?
I was grade 1/2, 27mm, ER 8/8, PR 8/8, 1 positive node. and would like to think I was not tested but in the random group, but who knows?!
I wanted a mastectomy ASAP, which was thr correct choice in my case as it was close to the chest wall but clear. I'm sticking my neck out here, but with the grade 3 I'd have the chemo. It isn't nice, but it's doable..... and I went into the trial to avoid it! I just wanted to not wonder what if?
Thanks so much for your advice and for jumping in here, Londonmumof2, my mx was over 2 years back so treatment out of date already! But actually I didn’t need chemo anyway!
