I've noticed joint pain (beyond the bone pain from docetaxel / figrastim) that I think is due to early menopause from the chemo ablating my ovaries. I'm meant to be going onto Goserelin / Zoladex and Exemestane after chemo, so I'd like to be proactive about tackling joint pain. Apart from anything else I really miss the physical and social aspects of visiting people for walks, my running club and gym classes and don't want to have to give them up.
I've also noticed friends going through natural menopause asking about joint pain, where it's hard to tell what might be a touch of arthritis or get their GPs to say anything more than 'it's just menopause', so I'm partly asking for them.
Has anyone got any suggestions for supplements or other ways to manage joint pain? One friend has mentioned soy supplements (possibly Menopace Night), but are they ok for oestrogen positive cancer people? Or are there other supplements that have helped you?
She also mentioned Fushi EPO - my original surgeon suggested EPO, but not specifically for joints, but I assume that means it's ok to take generally.
I take loratadine (useless IMO for allergies and my daughter agrees too!), high strength turmeric, a multi and vitamin D. There is a debate about plant pseudo oestrogens, so I'd avoid. I also try to limit dairy.
Some women find sour cherry helps and a it stimulates melatonin take it in the evening. I didn't find it helped me, and it upset my tummy so stopped, but really popular so worth a try.
If you are looking at supplements please do your research as some could interfere with your medication. Collagen for example is linked to recurrence.
You'll probably find that you're stiff after sitting a while or first thing on thr morning but it gets better after moving. Try different brands if you have a lot of pain, as many women find it varies by brand. I've just come off Letrozole, tried 4 brands and they were all different!) Extemestane is meant to be a bit kinder, and I'm about to start it too! Good lock and fingers crossed you'll be one of 'lucky ones' with few side effects. X
After reading your post the other week moomy about Clarityn, I decided to give it a try! I really didn’t think it would work but low and behold the knee pain is gone although I think it has transferred to my hand as it’s now painful!!:)
