I’ve had a lumpectomy,- February , Chemo March - July and radiotherapy, August - finished on the 12th but still have a lumpy breast with a distinct little lump under scar. Should I be worried?
Hi
My lumpectomy and radiotherapy was about 3 years ago and I still have lumpy bits (I had 8cm chopped out - so quite a chunk, so it may be different). It's highly likely that it is scar tissue under your scar and of course radio changes things in your breast too.. It's surprising how long the breast takes to heal - It took over a year after finishing radio before mine stopped hurting when I lifted something with that arm/ laid on it at night.
You'll probably be due a follow up appointment having finished your radio in the next couple of months? If you're really worried you can either wait until then or give your BC nurse a call in the meantime I am certain that they'll reassure you.
Best wishes, Lesley x
Thank you Lesley. I too had a large chunk taken out - they did describe it as a therapeutic mammoplasty rather than a lumpectomy as it reduced the size of the breast so almost a reconstruction using the remaining breast tissue, I think I’m more concerned with not being able to distinguish a new lump from post surgery lumps! Having said that as you say it takes some healing and having chemo I’m sure delays the process. Xx
I am concerned too as not able to distinguish new lump from post surgery lumps… it’s a never ending carousel of worrying thoughts !
I think all lumps should be worried about. Could you ask your breast care nurse or GP to examine to put your mind at rest x
I try to avoid my GPs as useless.
I direct everything through BN as told to bypass the GP and go straight to them if any worries which I have done. So surgeon has said she’s not too concerned but I can go see her next Friday for reassurance
I found a lump near my scar tissue and went to my GP about it. She was brilliant, called my surgeon's secretary there and then and I was having an ultrasound at the hospital that afternoon. They told me straight away it was just scar tissue, but emphasised how they always want people to come in and get thing checked out. It is never a waste of time if you are worried or something doesn't seem right.
Yes, always get these things checked or you make yourself I’ll with worry x
