hi

i had a mastectomy 5 weeks ago and lymph node removal. I have cording and I’m exercising daily. I also have hypersensitivity in upper arm and under armpit chest area, which I understand will go off in time. But I also have terrible itching that turns to burning/itching in my lower arm. I have to try to resist the slightest itch or it’s turns into a nightmare of itching. I assume this is also a side effect and wonder if anyone has any tips to help ease this?

Thank you

Alison x

  • Hi

I had the symptoms you've mentioned but definitely not the itching and had all expected side effects (not lymphodema yet though thankfully).  Have you mentioned this to your BCN? I certainly would.

My secret? Being daft & staying positive.
  • After lumpectomy and lymph node removal I had unbearable itching on the inside of my upper arm thought it was chafing from my chest drain.

It transpired to be the nerves trying to realign themselves after being cut. I used aquaeous cream and a gel ice pack to numb it but there wasn't much else could be done. It went away eventually.

thank you for your reply.  yes the itching is unbearable so I avoid the slightest itch as it turns into a nightmare. The BCN has never heard of itching, apparently. But I never had it before the surgery. Started to think was just me imagining it. Feel better thinking I’m not alone and hope it goes off soon x

  • Hi Miss Independent
Don’t know if you still go on here?  I am wondering if you sorted out the itching?

I have recently started to get very itchy on the top of my wrists and back of my hand.  If I accidentally do scratch it, it becomes terrible! It is driving me mad at times!

Hi it did stop eventually I had to really avoid starting though . I used lots of moisturiser to cool it down even though it wasn't dry.. nurses didn't acknowledge this as a side effect. Takes a couple of months for me. X
