I am day 3 after having a right breast mastectomy and have just removed my pressure dressing. I dont think anything can prepare you for what you see in the mirror for the first time post op!
Pre op I had an open mind regarding reconstruction but now my initial thought is....I want my breast back! I am so luck to have the most amazing supportive husband who stood by me as I cried for my loss and not once showed any shock at what we faced in that mirror this morning.
My hospital is not doing any form of reconstructive at the present time due to Covid restrictions. Luckily we have private medical insurance, my breast care nurse has suggested I would get better options if I use this rather than the NHS. Has anyone any advice or recommendations for clinics to use please. There seems to be so many out there and I am lost at how to choose. I have had Nottingham recommend, anyone have experience of this clinic?
Hi
I hope you are generally well (considering) ? I would think part of the decision is also what reconstruction you would want to have ? I think not many private patients are no being offered Diep surgery at present due to the long surgery/hospital stay/intensive nursing ,so my suggestion is to think about the surgery you would want - also if you are having radiotherapy that can have an impact. Has your BCN given you any leaflets on reconstruction ? I think there are some available on the Macmillan website ( or the Breast can we now site) I had an implant originally and then , 2 1/2 years later a Diep flap, there are pros and cons with both these operations , and at the end of the day nothing is remotely like your own breast ,so maybe take a bit of time to mourn what you have lost - that might sound dramatic , but you have had a traumatic and dramatic thing happen to you . I think a lot of women’s view before they have breast cancer is that they would always have a mastectomy but the reality is somewhat different isn’t it ? I hope someone can come along to give you some advice , but if you are a member of a well known social media site there are two great groups on there who are really active with discussions such as yours.
Very best wishes
Jo x
