Dear all

I sincerely hope no one feel like I do. I felt that I was discriminate by the medical professional. I went to the doctors surgery as I felt a lump in my breast. I had triple negative breast cancer last September. As I may or may not have asthma but I find it difficult to breath with a face mask. As the surgery policy is if you have breathing difficult s you do not have to wear a face mask. I was refuse to entrance to sit in the waiting room and was accuse that I could spread covid 19. I said do not be silly. I have been shielding and Bath has one of the lowest rate. I felt totally embrassed and I am not sure if I will be able to get medical care because I find it difficult to wear a face mask. So if the lump is cancer how am I going to be tested or have any treatment - they might just as well put a gun to my head.

  • Hi - how awful that you were made to feel like this.

Can you ask for a telephone consultation with the dr? My surgery have been doing everything they can over the telephone and trusted me that what I am telling them is correct.  Whilst the dr wouldnt be able to feel the lump on the phone, surely you could be referred back to the hospital breast care dept? Or can you call your consultant / the hospital directly and get booked in this way?

i hope you get seen quickly to hopefully put your mind at rest.

  • Buy cheap disposable paper masks!  They are useless but look the part and easy to breathe through!

My husband and daughter have asthma, my husband on list of inhalers that meant he has to shield until August according to Welsh Govt.  I bought 50 paper masks off Ebay for a £5 just in case they are compulsory!  My daughter had to use one to view a house as Estate Agents won't let you view otherwise.  She didn't find breathing a problem.

  • I too have asthma but not severe, I made my own mask and wash it out every time I use it, two layers of a good quality cotton plus a layer of interfacing and a tiny pocket to insert a twist tie to shape it over my nose, and have no problem breathing wearing it. My only problem is the Letrozole flushes, when they occur, make the mask rather hotter than it might be! But I try to divert my thoughts when a flush begins which helps!

Thanks for the info. I did buy a cotton face mask at the pharmacy and did find that I could breath but I will never trust the medical profession again. There attitude is not what I expect.

I had a telephone call but had to have my breast check before I could be referred back to the breast clinic. Thanks.

  • Hi Funnygirl,

I'm sorry to hear that you had this problem at your surgery. Not very proffessionally handled I would say!

Howeveer ,(and I may be wrong )I thought you would have open access to your BCN and breast clinic. That was certainly the case for me last time and even in these covid times I have telephone access and if need be face to face contact followiing radiotherapy. It might be worth trying a phone call to them. Wishing you luck in persuing this xx Kwissy

Thank you for your reply. I have never been told that I could ring up. Things were left in limbo. I have not had a follow up to tell me what to do when treatment finish. When the covid 19 came into force the whole medical profession just shut their doors hospital and primary. I was left to sort things out for myself, probably as the hospital had their hands full. Unfortunately I have got another lump in my breast and I am not sure what is going to happen as the hospital is not yet back to normal. Just wait and see. There is always a silver lining over the clouds. Things will sort it self out.

  • Hi

You should have been assigned a BC nurse from the moment you started treatment.  I think, given covid, you should ring your doctor and request a referral for your breast lump and if they need to feel the lump then expect that appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.  Given your history, the doctor should be taking this seriously.

Once you have your referral to the breast care clinic, ask them for details of your BC nurse - including her phone number.  That point of contact is what Macmillan as a charity started for breast cancer patients years and years ago!

Please don't just wait and see, it doesn't sound as if you are being 'looked after' as well as you should and any lump should be investigated as soon as possible.

Ring your doctor and make sure you have that appointment - irrespective of wearing a mask or not!

My cancer diagnosis was 25th June 2017 and I had my annual follow up - 25th June just gone!  When I said to the nurse that I was very impressed on getting it 'to the day' and it must be a worrying time for her with covid, she said "it would be more worrying for me if women didn't get themselves checked here because of it and I worked so hard to make sure that I didn't have any back logs so that no one would be put at further risk of cancer" Now THAT is the sort of treatment you should be expecting.

Quote me if you want to, to your doctor - Dorset County Hospital.  (we have had it fairly easy with covid in West Dorset, but they still had about 60 deaths in this hospital, so there was a definite impact).

    Kindest wishes,

Many thanks. I did go the doctors and have been fast track for suspect breast cancer. It was the reason I went to the doctor as well as possible asthma hay fever problems. I did complaint and they reply by passing the info to the site manager.
