Hi everyone,

Dont know if I’m looking for advice, information or just having a rant! Had routine blood test at GP surgery last week followed by phone call next day to say they’d had results and they showed I was anaemic (never a problem before) went through all the questions on symptoms and signs but I have none of them so they don’t know what’s causing it. So wanted a re test of bloods which I had yesterday! In the meantime they ring me again yesterday to say they’d looked at results again from last week and noticed that I’m also Vitamin D Deficient and need supplements for that (1 more tablet is not a problem)

They have now referred me to the Gastro team to investigate the source of the anaemia, they contacting oncologist as not due to see them till August to see what treatment they want me to have!

I’m having Herceptin injections every 3 weeks and Letrozole tablets daily!

Anyone else had this issue or similar?
I’m so fed up right now but don’t know if it’s being stuck in rut of being at home cause of shielding or the fact nothing seems to be going right!

When breast consultant told me he’d removed all cancer and I was cancer free I thought things would start getting back to normal (whatever that is!) but now feel I’m still along way from that! See no evilConfused

Sorry for the rant xxxx

  • Hi

Rant away!  - especially if it helps you feel better Slight smile

I:don't know about anaemia, but the Vit D is fairly normal with Letrozole.  I'm on Anastrozole (similar) and I had been prescribed Adcal +Vit D because these oestrogen suppressant drugs can affect bone density - right from the start of taking them.

Have you had a DEXA scan? this is usual and then repeated every 3 years to see if your bones have been weakened by the Letrozole.  I did have to ask for mine as my oncologist didn't mention it.  I was osteopenic when scanned, but I got the impression that these Adcal+vit D are usual to be prescribed with the ER+ tablets, rather than because I was osteopenic.

Might be worth taking a look at what foods and drinks reduce / increase the iron in your body too.  For instance, I drink a lot of green tea, but I do know that this can reduce iron levels if drunk too much and it's recommended not to have greater than 5 cups a day.  I don't expect it will be down to something as simple as this, but you could have a look at your diet and see if there is anything in there that could be impacting it, or anything you could add to help it.

    Kindest wishes,

Thanks for your reply. Not had my bone density scan yet as it was cancelled due to covid!
Have had a phone call this week from them saying they are starting again so just got to wait for appointment to come.....

My diet isn’t great in fact I’m eating very little n hubby keeps asking if I’ve eaten properly when he comes home from work! I am trying but find it difficult as tired a lot of the time! Hopefully once new meds kick in the tiredness will ease a bit n I can start doing more?

  • Hi

Have a look at this list in the meantime, there may be things that you can have that can quicken the tiredness that you feel.  Good on your husband for nagging you! Slight smile

Some of the best plant sources of iron are:

    • Beans and lentils.
    • Tofu.
    • Baked potatoes.
    • Cashews.
    • Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach.
    • Fortified breakfast cereals.
    • Whole-grain and enriched breads.

    Best wishes,
