Anastrozole after 5 years - options ??

Hello everyone

I am coming up to 5 years post diagnosis and I am seeing my oncologist July 6th.

I have been on tamoxifen then anastrozole for 5 years and I am wondering what different options people have been offered for continuing.

I have read an article saying an extra 2 years anastrozole is as good as another 5 years - so 7 years in total rather than 10 years but things change so quickly !

My oncologist is heavily involved in research so I am sure he will give me the best options but I would like to know what is out there.

Thoughts ?!

I hope everyone is okay and I have been thinking a lot about those of you having chemo in this Covid era.

Karen. Xx

  • Hi Karen

I can't help with your question, having had a different type of cancer to you, but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. This could be because it's slipped down the page before someone with the right experience has seen it. By replying to you it will 'bump' your post back to the top of the page where it'll be more easily seen.

All the best with whatever you decide to do

  • Thank you .

I think most people come on here less as time goes on and return to their lives so I wasn’t surprised by no response.

Wishing you well too and thanks again for taking the time to reply. X

Hi Karen. I took Tamoxifen for 2 and a half years and now Anastrozole for the last two months. My oncologist has been very clear that, due to research, the protocol is now 10 years and I am going with that. To be honest  I will do anything to not have the cancer return and to be around to see my grandchildren grow up. Now 3 years since active treatment ended and the little voice still sits in my head. Worried

  • Thanks Liliy

My oncologist agrees. He said there was only one study at the moment that said 7 years might be as good as 10 years and although it was a large study he said it wasn't enough to reduce time on AI

Like you I am happy to do everything I can !

    Good luck. X

  • Hi Jediknight

I had breast cancer10 years ago. I had a mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. I had radiotherapy  then aanastrazole. I took the Anstrazole for 5 years as recommended, i read some research recommending staying on it for 10 years. I tolerated it for 8 years. I recommend you stay on it as long as possible. Unfortunately i have now got a recurrence which is in my lymph glands and spread to my lungs and bones. I have a very good oncologist keen to treat me to give me the best quality of life even though the cancer cannot be cured. I'm back on Letrazole which is similar to anastrazole with targeted therapy which  I understand is similar to chemoherapy. I am tolerating the treatment well at present although it is early days and i am feeling well.

After 10 years cancer free, i have now been diagnosed with a recurrence of my reast cancer which has spread to my lungs and bones. This came as a terrible shock as I had no symptoms althogh I have a muscuar dystrophy which was giving me cause for concern. I was eperiencing increased difficulty swallowing and shortness of breath leading to a CT scan which showed a suspicious lesion and further inestigation led to my current diagnosis. I have been commenced on targeted therapy and due to have injections after seeing my dentist for a check up and any necessary treatment. in the current time with corona virus it is not easy to get dental treatment. I have a dental problem needing treatment. I have a loose filling and a break in the same tooth. I managed to get a check up but my dentist cannot perform the relevant treatment. I am currently waiting for a call to determin how I can get the treatment done.
  • Hi

Thank you for you reply. It must of been a huge shock after 10 years. I am going to stay on it as long as possible, I think that is the right thing for me to do.

Wishing you well and I’m glad to hear your oncologist is doing the best for you .

  • Hi Jediknight

It definately was a shock, considering i have a muscle wasting disorder which affects my swallowing. The symptoms I was getting i thought were due to my muscular dystrophy. As the swallowing was rapidly deteriorating and I started getting breathing difficulties, my G.P referred me for further investigations.

The only thing with the Anastrazole is the sweats, I'm on letrazole this time , which gives the same side effects of the sweats. I got chillows, these are gel filled pillows. I got one that is large enough to lay on  as well as a pilow size for my head and have found them very helpful for coping with the weats at night.

Thankyou for your well wishes, i remain positive despite the incurable diagnosis i've been given. I'm glad you are going to stay on the anastrazole as long as you can, it's definitly the best thing to do.

    xx
