I am going in to have my right breast removed in 2 weeks, feel anxious as anyone been through this and how did they find it x
Hi Gina
I had a mastcetomy, left side 7 weeks ago. Had surgery on the Thursday and discharged on the Saturday. I had two drains, one which was removed prior to discharge and the other drain removed a week after my operation. I wouldn't say I was in any pain but mainly discomfort for which I just took pain killers. Sleeping was difficult at first and I actually slept upright on the seatee for a few nights. You will need lots of cushions. Unfortunately I did have an infection 5 weeks post op and had 2 lots of antibiotics, I start chemo in 3 weeks.
Any questions please post on here as you will gets lots of advice and support.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
Best wishes

Hi Gina 62
I had my right breast removed in January 2019. I also had an implant at the same time so that I wasn't left flat. So not sure if you are having that done which makes the operation longer. I had a drain in for 2 weeks. The pain was not much and was able to keep it to next to nothing with just pain killers. It is sore and you definitely know you had a operation, but just listen to your body and don't over do it.
Its only natural to feel anxious but you will be fine. I got given a nice little heart sharped pillow (made I think by volunteers) and it was very useful to have, if you don't get one just a soft pillow will do the same job.
I would say about 3 months from operation I was back doing run and cycling, I could have done this earlier but I wanted to make sure it was healed fully before doing sport.
All the best and if you would like to ask anything else please do not hesitate,
El
i had my left breast removed two weeks ago. I have not had pain relief as I was ok. Uncomfortable at night so do make sure you have a v cushion as they are great. I am healing well and all is good. Will be seen in a year by the surgeon for reconstruction. I even did yoga fir the 2.6 challenge 4 days after surgery. Everyone is different take it easy and don’t rush yourself. Any questions feel free to ask. All the best I will be thinking of you.

Hi Gina. I had my left breast removed at the end of 2018 and I can honestly say it was not as painful as I thought it was going to be. Just discomfort rather than pain. I did not have a reconstruction as I didnt want to go through another operation if anything went wrong with the implant. I also did not fancy having silicone in my body I had already had 2 lumpectomies before the mastectomy and enough was enough.
I am quite happy being flat and with the prosthesis nobody would ever know. One bit of advice I would give you is to make sure you do the exercises you are given as they really do help with your recovery and making sure you can move your arm freely in due course. Also make sure you massage the wound and your arm to prevent lymphodema. I used Aveeno moisturiser which was recommended by my breast nurse as it is very gentle and not scented.
You will be fine Gina. Try not to worry and just think that the reason for it is to get rid of the cancer so it is a no brainer
Good luck and all my best wishes to you for a quick recovery and a good outcome

Hi Gina
I had mastectomy June 2019, you will have discomfort for a while but I did not have pain. The drains are very uncomfortable but I only had them in for 4 days so hopefully you will be the same. Try to do the exercises they give you as they really help to get your arm moving. Honestly it is not as bad as you think it will be. Take a day at a time , make sure you rest after the surgery you will be fine.
