Axillary lymph node clearance

Hi,

I have recently had surgery for grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma.  There was cancer in one of the margins so I have to have another op.   Also the one lymph node had cancer in so they’ve recommended lymph node clearance.  I really don’t feel comfortable and would prefer to just have radiation treatment.  I will be having radiation treatment and hormonal medications Tamoxifan going forward

I wondered if anyone here has made the decision NOT to have clearance and what the outcome was.  Thanks Blush

  • Thanks Lucy. Good to hear and you sound well. My thoughts are they only took one node so I’m finding it difficult reconcile in my mind a full clearance based on one node.  Feels very extreme. Thanks for your post. A

  • Hello Aliwtem,

hope you are well and hope your treatment has went well

  • Hi, hope you are very well and enjoying life as i can see it been 4 years. I had mastectomy and lymph node involvement was found in my pathology results. However, at start  results showed no involvement. After my mastectomy I had second surgery which was a lymph node clearance,  results showed one out of eight cancerous. Now waiting for my CT and bone scan results which is terrifying . I will find out what kind of treatments I will need. What treatment did you have? Im aged 36 and it wasn’t expected so still trying to cope.

  • Hi  thanks for your message. I am doing OK thanks and trying to move forward with life. Sorry to hear you are dealing with lymph node involvement. I had three out of eight nodes positive when they did the clearance and was told I needed chemo, radio then letrozole. With only one node positive, you may not be recommended chemo and it will depend on your specific diagnosis and cancer type. I do remember the wait for CT and bone scan results being really awful and I hope you are coping OK. Whatever the outcome, you will be well looked after. Sending virtual hugs.
