Radioactive  Welcome to the May Radiotherapy Discussion Radioactive

This is a place where you can ask for advice, give and/or receive support and just query anything involving BC radiotherapy.

A couple of quick tips, if you are using a car to your radiotherapy appointments daily, ask if your hospital offers free or discounted parking for people going through treatment - Most do.

For more tips, here's our Radiotherapy Tips Page and other replies you may find useful.

External Beam Radiotherapy information link.

Here's also A link from the Macmillan Information pages, and this helpful video that some of you may want to have a look at.
This is a link to The April Radiotherapy Chat if you need to backtrack - It will be locked shortly for replies.

If you have any questions, just holler - someone will soon reply with some support or advice.
Keep using the creams post rads as you will still be 'cooking' for a couple of weeks.

Take care, G n' J

Good morning everyone, I am new to this community but am already learning. I had a partial mastectomy on 18th March having been diagnosed with a lobular carcinoma the previous week. All went well and I have been feeling great. Thankfully my lymph nodes were clear and the oncotype score was 15 which apparently is good news for a woman my age (70). I am now on Anastrozole, the only side effect seems to be some hot flushes, but I can live with that!

Next Wednesday I start nine days of radiotherapy under Fast Forward, and have been carefully moisturising the area using aqueous cream as recommended by the nurse. I am rather proud of my little tattoos - generally I don’t like them, my daughter was saying it’s a pity they don’t do little hearts instead of dots.  How does everyone manage on treatment days with having a shower?  I use PitRock deodorant, which is a solid crystal, no nasties and no perfume, can I put it on?

By the way, I live in Ireland and they brought forward implementation of Fast Forward because of Ccoronavirus. I am very used to online  forums but the Irish Cancer Society forum is very disappointing, nobody seems to really use it, so I was delighted to discover this one.

    Morning   Four leaf clover

Warm welcome to the club no one wants to join - pleased to read you have recovered from surgery well and have had great results re: nodes and oncotype score Thumbsup tone1

Most here would either use none just prior to rads or either Pit-Rok or Bionsen both aluminium and Paraben free. Most are having Rads under the Fast Forward protocol at the moment. Slightly higher rads dose but treatment over less days.

While you are around do click the 'Join This Group' button at the top of the page under the title.  Then you will be able to start a new discussion if you have any other specific questions and get email notifications of replies etc.

Hope this is of some help, any questions - Just holler there is always someone kicking about the place Hugging

    Take care, G n' J

    Hi All

i am due to start my radio next week..

Had my ‘tattoos’ done last week - didn’t hurt but won’t be rushing for a bigger one!!

Been today for another scan while holding my breath to inflate my lungs. And been given new dates to start, next Thursday.

Don’t know if I am feeling anxious about the rad, or about the fact I am nearing the end of my treatment!!

    Take care

    Caroline

Hi. I'm in Ireland, too, and found this forum very helpful during my treatment last year, which finished with radiotherapy at St. Lukes in Dublin in December.

Well, not quite. Still getting Herceptin injections every three weeks in Sligo hospital.

Where will you have your radio?

I just showered each morning during my 15 radio sessions, without using anything. E 45 cream after the radio sessions.

Wish you, and all here, all best with your treatments.

Hi Drierlei, I’m in Howth and will be having my treatment in the St. Luke’s Centre at Beaumont Hospital. The day I went to the Breast Clinic there for all my tests, I met a young woman from Sligo, she had travelled up by train very early that morning. I wonder what her results were. How are you doing with the Herceptin? I’m lucky that my tumour was Her2 negative so I don’t need it.

Someone mentioned aloe vera gel for after the treatment, and I remembered that I have a new unused tube, so it is now in the fridge ready to cool me down if needed!

    Hi All,

    To help allay any fears....

I finished the 5 day Partial Breast RT (had BCS,  zero lymphnode) using conventional external 2 D beam machine, 26 grays total with minimal additional CT scan daily dose over 5 days.

Apart from the mild clunking  of the machine I barely felt a thing (whuch I understand is normal).  They had great choice in music too...for the 15 mins or so I was there (actual scan + treatment is very quick but set-up measurements take time).

I showered every day using a zero soap shower product (there are many on the supermarket shelf and those ones are labelled as zero soap on the front...i think.

I used Zerobase to moisturise  (it was already just something in the house...not something soecial) and used it every day, twice a day:  Note.it'ss useful to get a cheap bra or something as it gets covered in the cream.

i actually took the cream with me to hospital.. in a bag surrounded by Ice Block coolers but I never used it til I hot home an hour after treatment.  After 2 days I didn't bother to take it in with me.  I also took a soft cami-trype top thinking thatcI couldn't wear a bra but I had no problem at all wearing a bra (NB partial breast RT)..

Finished RT on Wed 13th and so far, 2 days later, despite having very fair skin that burns pdq in the sun, I am a tiny bit pink which I think is good for 2 days post Rad.

To date everything has been very easy wrt RT..

So...Pinky but alas not perky (lol)

    Hope this helps.

    PP.
