Hi All

I an halfway through breast radiotherapy and I am feeling crazy tired. I know that is to be expected but can anyone explain what is actually happening in my body to cause this effect?

stay safe everyone x

  • Hi

Sorry to hear that you are suffering fatigue during your radiotherapy.  Here's a link to the Macmillan information relating to this.

I finished my radio in October 2017 and bizarrely I had more energy than usual.  One of the things that I was advised on starting was to drink plenty of fluids.  I always drink a lot as it's been my firm belief that keeping hydrated is a cure for an awful lot of things, but I drank even more during my radio. I also exercised more too.

I made friends with a few ladies who went at the same time as me and 2 of the ladies who specifically struggled with drinking much in the way of fluids were seriously struggling with fatigue.  One lady even fell asleep at her desk at work, but she mentioned she'd managed a 'couple of cups of tea' and we all went at around the 4pm time slot.  By that time, I would have had 2 pints of squash and 10 large mugs of hot drink (green tea, black tea, coffee) and after radio I'd go to the hospital coffee shop for a large drink for the drive home. It might be coincidence, but it's worth a shot if you aren't drinking too much to see if it helps with the fatigue.

The other thing that I did was to reduce my workload during the radiotherapy weeks.  I work part time employed (mornings) and also I run my own business in the afternoons.  During those 3 weeks, I closed my business so that the afternoon 'work' was just driving myself the 60 miles to and from radio and thus reducing the stress of trying to manage too much.  The lady who fell asleep at her desk was employed full time and she'd not worked there long enough for sick pay and lived on her own, so she struggled on with working full time, going to radio and making up the hours.  It could be that she was just doing too much.  The other lady was retired, so it doesn't equate with her, but she too wasn't drinking very much.

    I hope this helps.
Kindest wishes and you too, stay safe!
