Hello everyone, I’m feeling quite down and depressed just now. My surgery for a left side mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy should have been this Thursday. Cancelled with absolutely no idea of when they might do it. I’m currently seeing if I can have it done privately. It will take a big chunk of my savings, which is not good when you’re retired.

The hospital (Worthing) have prescribed Letrazole. No one has spoken to me about this and I’m really worried. I already have osteoporosis and have stopped the HRT patches, which probably helped, on the day of my diagnosis. I’m also worried about the Letrazole side effects. Does anyone have any info that could help me please

  • Hi, ,

I hope I can help with the Letrozole side effects, I too had mild osteoporosis when I started it, two years ago and take Alendronic Acid, have a reasonably good calcium rich diet and take D3  (had such awful indigestion with Adcal D3 that I only managed half the dose before finding a source of D3)

my Dexa scan certainly is no worse, perhaps a touch better; (the report did say Alendronic Acid has to continue as long as I’m on Letrozole and a repeat Dexa in 3 years rather than the usual 5) but I’m also weight bearing A bit more by walking/(marching And a bit of jogging all on the spot at present of course due to the virus) and yoga.

So I hope that gives you some confidence.....

How distressing this must be for you. .

You may want to contact your NHS trust for support but they may be completely overwhelmed by Corona and not able to immediately assist..

My surgery due for last Thursday has also been cancelled but I have been assured that everything is being done to find a safe place to do it. I think that is the problem. With Covid 19 in hospitals, it is very difficult to find a surgical environment which is safe for vulnerable cancer patients. I'm also confident that if my surgery was 24 hour life threatening, it wouldn't be delayed..

I am fortunate to have the option of private care but this is redundant as all my private hospitals have now transferred their services to the the NHS corona effort.

I've spent the last practically 36 hours reading posts on this site and got a much better understanding  and calmness of being diagnosed with cancer and want to reassure you.

I have also been prescribed Letrazole and given a booklet to explain what it is and what for etc. It seems a good conservative treatment both for those that are unable to have surgery and also as a preventative measure for secondary growths.

I would urge you to contact your cancer team by phone or email . They will obviously have lots of enquiries and may not be able to come back to you straight away but should hopefully be picking up messages like my team are..

I would hope that your medics, whilst feeling the strain, are approachable as across the NHS they are trying they're best to help everyone.

Feel free to express your frustrations and I hope I can help support you on line.

    take care V

Thanks so much for your replies - much appreciated. My other complication is that I had already been to the dentist about going on bisphosphosphonates on the Drs advice ( before breast cancer diagnosis and everything getting worse with Coronavirus ... it was only weeks ago really!) I have gum problems and need treatment before I can take the medication. Of course I can’t have the treatment at the moment. I agree though, I must try to get through to someone to discuss my best option before I take Letrazole. I’m seeing a private surgeon this afternoon and my prescription is waiting for me at the chemist.

Sorry about spelling of bisphosphonate! Not sure what happened there.

  • The other ‘plus’ (if anything can be a plus in these awful times) is that bisphosphanates can help prevent bone mets, apparently?!

hope you get all the treatment you need very soon

  • Hi, sorry to hear of your challenges.  I am lucky to be nearing the end of my treatment.

If it helps I too am due to have biphos-stuff (have given up on this word) but as I haven't started yet have been told it will be delayed anyway - they did mention July to start.  So the likelihood is that your delayed dental treatment won't hold up the 6 monthly infusions.

Keep up with the Letrazole and adcal as that will serve you well, as it is me, in the meantime.
