Hi all,

Just joined as I have been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer after having DCIS six years ago.

I had an op to remove 2 areas of my right breast and now have been told I need to have a mastectomy.

Thinking about having reconstruction with implants and would like to know your thoughts on this if you have had this too.

I have quite big boobs 38f so wondering if this is best option.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry no one has come forward yet to share their experiences. This is probably because this is such a busy group that your post has slid down the page before it's been seen. By replying to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the page.

When you have a minute it would be useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi @Booby J I have big boobs too and was advised against implants because of that. I’m due to have DIEP flap surgery next week. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it! Slight smile
At the end of the day it should be your choice and your choice only of what option to choose but great to talk about all the options out there. Best of luck with whatever you choose. x

  • Many thanks for your reply. Have consultant appt on monday to discuss options. Hope your surgery goes well. I'll let you know what I decide.

    Thanks again.

  • Hiya,

I go in for masectomy tomorrow and was wondering how your operation went.

  • I had a mastectomy 3 weeks ago, all seems to have gone well. Had drain in so stayed in hospital overnight. I’ve a bit of swelling and it’s a bit uncomfortable but other than that all good.

The reconstruction part was postponed due to coronavirus but now I’ve had the mastectomy I don’t think I’ll go for reconstruction!!

I’m sure all will be well tomorrow, come back and let us know how it all went. x

  • So glad all went well. I'm not having reconstructive surgery either so your post has really helped, as I am sure I have made the right decision.

I am in overnight too. Will give you an update as soon as I can.

    Going at noon today.

    Thank you.

  • Thinking about you!! x

Im sure if you decide later on you want reconstruction you would be able to go for it.

  • Thank you for your kind words.

Had right side macestomy yesterday at 1.30pm and home by 1pm today.  Seems to have gone well back in 2 weeks for follow up.

Seems so surreal. Only 4 beds being used last night out of 25, so quiet apart from me being sick lol. Felt better after though.

NHS were brilliant, could have gone private but liked my Surgeon so didn't. He explained everything to the last detail.

    Keep well and safe.

  • Glad it all went well! Have to say I agree the NHS were brilliant! I was in a ward of 24 individual rooms, there was me and one other person!!! I basically had a private nurse!!

Hooe you get some sleep tonight. Take care. x

funny you say that about reconstruction, I had my mastectomy a week ago, was originally due to have reconstruction immediately which was cancelled because of Covid. I am now also thinking I might not go for reconstruction at all, right now being flat on one side really doesn’t bother me...
