Hi

I was about to post when I saw the discussion on "Aches", I am having awful pain and stiffness in my shoulder and upper arm after a mastectomy. It has been about 6 weeks now since surgery and I developed this after about 3 weeks and it just keeps getting worse. I have been to my first visit to a physio who has also given me exercises for "chording" in my armpit, but the more I do these the more my joints suffer! I have also been told it by a different consultant that it may be an after effect of surgery as they strap your arm up above your head. I have not had chemo or radiotherapy and only recently started on Letrozole so it can't be side effects of any of that?  Has anyone else had this and how long does it last? Its like severe "frozen shoulder" and is restricting my movements ahh!

  • Hi Penny,

so sorry you’re having so much trouble. Has the physio made arrangements to see you again? As it sounds as if you’ll need more help.

in the meantime, take paracetamol half an hour before doing those standard exercises, so timing of paracetamol doses needs thinking about, but please don’t stop trying the exercises!

I really hope that shoulder eases for you, having had a bad impingement that needed surgery years back I know how incredibly painful it can be, and that was on my Mx side too so I was concerned; but I did exercises religiously and was lucky it was all ok

    hugs xxx

    Hi Moomy

Thank you for the reply and your support.

I try to keep using my arm as much as possible to keep it mobile and it is then bearable. Its when I sit down or go to bed that it all locks up and that's when it is most painful.  I am seeing my physio next week again and am trying to do the exercises as much as possible but I really didn't expect all these extra aches and pains from the surgery. I was told some of the risks such as lymphodema but not everything! (I think its more the lymph node biopsy that is causing most of it!)

I suppose it will all ease in time, meanwhile I'll stay positive and hopeful.

  • A year after treatment, and I am still struggling with my arm and shoulder. I had physio after mastectomy but in the last month or so have gone backwards. I am quite active but I find my shoulder aches,,,and is stiff. I still have quite visible chording and I am going to speak to surgeon to see whether there is anything that will help.

    Hi Galligirl,

Thanks for your reply to my post.  I also have an appointment this week with my consultant to find out if anything can be done.  My arm and shoulder seem to be on a short hinge rather than the type of ball joint it should be like the other one.  If I have any outcome I will post it for all.

    Fingers crossed x
