Hi I’m undergoing a mastectomy on the 27th of January and would like to ask other members who have undergone this procedure where is the best place to purchase bras and swimwear, any recommendations will be greatly received thank you.
Asda are a popular choice for both, though most are only online. Search 'post surgery'. They sell out and restock all the time, so it's worth checking from time to time. You'll probably have a light softie at first, which can ride up, so the more sports bra style are good to hold them in place. Knitted Knockers provide free inserts which are great, and they make swim ones too.... all for free with some Lovehearts! X
Hi Debbie,
I’m two weeks post op and have been wearing a M&S post surgery sports bra with a softie. Also if you look on the website for Stella McCartney Cares they will send you a gorgeous pink lace post surgery bra for free or you can make a donation x I haven’t bought my swim costume yet so if you find a nice one let me know x
Hello Debbie,
I bought a beautiful KIM Melissa Odabash bikini from Amoena who specialise in stylish post-surgery products. It wasn't expensive and has served me so well since my surgery last May.
I had immediate TRAM recon at time of mastectomy so also have a big abdominal scar. The bikini bottoms can be worn folded down, or as I have worn them, unfolded so that they cover my scar. The bikini top has pads which can be removed/replaced with a prosthesis I imagine.
I took a short break 6 weeks after surgery last summer and managed to sit on the beach in a deckchair in the sunshine wearing my bikini and it felt wonderful! The bikini top is large enough that it covered my sports bra & dressings underneath, the bikini bottoms covering my abdominal & belly button dressings which I still had at the time.
I am now swimming regularly and it is starting to discolour with the chlorine. I have just treated myself to a new sports bikini from O'Neil who also do nice looking sport style bikinis which give good breast coverage. The bikini bottoms are lower so will show my scar but i'm trying to be brave about that!
Good luck & good health xx
