After attending the breast unit for few hours for tests and being told it's cancer, did anyone receive any help for coming to terms with their diagnosis, or where you left to cope.

  • Hello ,

so very sorry you’ve arrived here, and that you have definitely got breast cancer. I had a BCN in with my surgeon when I was told, actually at the mammogram/biopsy/surgeon appointment and she stayed with me a little while, and was very supportive, plus told me about her team of BCN’s and about how to contact them should I need to.

Hope you’ve got access to your BCN? As they really are a godsend here.

    Hugs xxx

  • I had a BCN with surgeon giving results.  I had my diagnosis on Weds and on Friday the BCN cane out to my home to speak to me and family.  It was really good but bcn was really  difficult to get hold of afterwards.  After my surgery I was assigned a different BCN who was truly amazing as was her colleague.  Never a question too trivial she was a great calming influence who would fit you in if you rang her worried.    She even had her colleague ring me with surgery results very late on a Friday when my results cane through as she was on leave and they like ladies to know ASAP especially if good news.

I do wish I had found this site at the beginning.  The one thing I do think they should sign post you too !

  • Hi

Yours sound similar to mine.  I went for my follow up tests at the breast unit (30 miles away from my normal hospital) and I had a chat from a lady at the start and then a chat at the end.  She made it pretty obvious that it was cancer without actually saying so. She handed me the Macmillan leaflet and said I'd be contacted with an appointment at my local hospital in due course and I left.  I'd gone on my own to that appointment as I wasn't at all concerned that I had cancer - completely thought it was because "quite often your first breast screening you may be called back because we don't know what your breasts are like", so I was convinced it was just normal procedure and nearly didn't bother wasting my time driving 60 miles for normal procedure!  Luckily I did eh?

It was about 2-3 weeks later that I saw the breast surgeon and my BCN at my local hospital where the breast surgeon confirmed it was cancer and to book the operation date.  I had already got my head around the fact I had cancer anyway, so it wasn't a shock then.  She even said "you do realise I have just told you that you have cancer don't you?" because I was so nonplussed about being told it.... as I say, I already knew 3 weeks earlier.  I suspect you will have the same as me, inasmuch that they aren't supposed to tell you at the breast unit and it should be the surgeon's job to tell you the results of the biopsies.   Just because they strongly suspect it, doesn't mean that it actually is, until the results of the biopsies are in.

In the meantime, before you get support from your BCN and team, stay on this site and get as much support from us here (and to be honest - I actually think this support is much better because everyone's either in or been in your situation on here).

    Kindest wishes,

  • Hi

To answer your question yes there is support in understanding your diagnosis  Hopefully you'll meet your BCN on Monday if not ask about them and support

My BCN was in with me on all appointments with time on our own afterwards for questions etc . She is always at end of phone and if she is away another nurse will take her calls . Also I was /am able to go in to see her when I feel the need .

Whilst I was receiving chemo and under the care of Oncologist she has rang me regularly to make sure I'm coping and if there are any issues .

Hopefully things will feel better on Monday

keep posting on here lots of support and information
