Hi, I had a lumpectomy in Nov and will be seeing the chemo team on Saturday to start chemo next week. I am struggling with sleeping, emotions, feeling scared. Can I ask is it usual to be offered counselling? XxX

  • Hi

Firstly, I just wanted to say that what you are feeling is pretty much normal as it is a huge thing to be diagnosed with cancer and as time passes you will find that these feelings will fade.  Never disappear, but they fade.  I thought about 'having cancer' every day for well over a year, but now 2.5 years later, I can sometimes forget and it doesn't impact every minute of every day like it used to do.

From my experience counselling isn't 'offered' - it wasn't brought up in conversation by my BC nurse anyway (but then she was pretty hopeless from the get-go for me).  I think if you speak to your BC nurse and ask if there are any offers of counselling she will more than likely know where you can go for some support.

I can remember at radiotherapy, I received a leaflet offering a radiotherapy group chat (but as the hospital was different from my local one - 30 miles away, I didn't go).  I did go to the hospital's post treatment meeting which was really good and there were loads and loads of leaflets of where local and national support was available.  It would have been nice to have it sooner, but the Macmillan leaflets were always available where ever I went for an appointment.

There's Maggie's Centres which you could have a look at and see if any are local to you.  You could also try ringing the helpline below and see if they can offer some advice.

Hope this helps and just try and take each day as it comes.

    Kindest wishes,

  • I think that it's unusual to be offered counselling,  but I spoke to my Macmillan nurse and was allocated six initial sessions quickly with our hospital clinical psychologist who was really good.  If you are in an area where Haven are based then they also offer 6 free sessions.  X

  • I have prostate cancer and went to a local charity where they offered coucelling and against my better judgement I took it and was greatly supprised at how much it actually helped just to sit in a quiet room with a cup of tea and and talk about excactly what and how you feel.

Good luck with your treatment. Reg

  • I was sign posted by my BC nurse to my local  Macmillan cancer support who made a referral for me to my local cancer support centre where I have been receiving counselling and I can also have 6 complementary therapy sessions.  I have found it really useful.

  • That's what I did and found the Reflexology was an amazing way to relax.
