Hi All,

I had my diagnosis last week and am seeing the surgeon and co this friday. I've been told I have high risk DCIS and my mastectomy should be 'soon'. How long did it take for you between meeting the surgeons to your actual op?

xx

  • Hi

You can read my story on profile just click on my name . I was 8 days from diagnosis to op.

Remember everyone's case is different and things can differ from area to area . As it happens it was my surgeon who gave me diagnosis . So surgery options were straight on table .

I know it's a very stressful time waiting but it is so much better once things are moving and you have your plan.

    take care

Hiya my op ( lumpectomy and 2 lymph nodes out to check ) was the day after diagnosed because he had a slot then my next op ( another lumpectomy 2 weeks after 1st when results came through) was again the next day again because there was a slot my mastectomy was three weeks after results of the last lumpectomy but he did say if I wanted he could again fit me in the following day but if I wanted a reconstruction straight away it would have to be three weeks

think it depends on availability of theatres in the hospital xx

  • I was diagnosed with intermediate DCIS 3rd June 2015 and had wire guided lumpectomy middle of July .  Delay as I had to have dire inserted in one hospital and then surgery in hospital 10 miles away and holiday clash with two consultants.  I then had radiotherapy in September.

  • I think everyone is different, and your team will, with you, find a plan that works for you.

i was diagnosed on 22nd February last year, had a sentinel node biopsy as a day patient as it looked as if nodes were clear (they were) and mastectomy on 3rd April after we’d had a short holiday. Sadly it needed repeating the day after as I’d even bled under the implant. But all went well after that, I didn’t need chemo or radiotherapy, just hormone busting meds. I did worry about spread between diagnosis and Mx but all seems ok!

  • Hi I have just seen this can I ask how long you waited pls for you surgery from meeting surgeon xx

  • The day I got my results was 15 th March and my surgery was booked in on the 25 th  March   I had a lumpectomy and centinel nodes removed    As above I suppose it’s what you need doing    When do you see your breast care specialist again  or you can ring your Macmillan nurse x

  • Hi I see my specialist on 21.6 21, how do I contact my Macmillan nurse xx

  • When I went to the hospital they ga e me a card. Have you had your diagnosis. Ring the breast are u it and ask to speak Macmillan nurse  they will probably take your number and ring you back

  • Hi

It will depend on your reconstruction you are having ? An implant with the mastectomy is quite routine surgery , other reconstruction using your body , such as DiEP, Tug etc need more intensive surgery and a big team (Diep in particularl) Opting for Diep means you need a ct scan to make sure you have large enough blood vessels in your tummy foe the operation , they also,I believe look at BMI at the moment and if it’s over about 30 won’t do that particular op. My mastectomy I had an implant and from seeing the surgeon to the operation was just over two weeks, I think if I had opted for DIep at that point it may have been nearer 4 weeks. When I had my first operation date  for delayed diep I was bumped the week before by someone having immediate reconstruction , so you should get a priority slot x

  • Just on another note , I am in Sheffield and there are no Macmillan Nurses , the Macmillan team all work with secondary and palliative care patients, so your area may be the same ?
