Need help with mind over matter. I had wire guided excision three weeks ago and a 1cm area suspicious calcification which all the medical professionals have been telling me was very small with potential to clear with no further treatment required has turned out to be 3cm medium and high grade dcis with only one clear margin. Plan is to do further 1cm in next few weeks with strong hint/suggestion this may not resolve it, and we’re into more radical territory. Needle biopsy , insertion of wire and the op have trashed my neck so recovery has been severely hampered by not being able to find good sleeping positions, or even to sit comfortably. Last week when neck seized up altogether, and felt like I couldn’t breathe, I was prescribed large doses of codeine and some diazepam which have helped massively but can’t stay on them forever. Been so miserable and frustrated, but hopeful until they told me about the 3cm. I can’t get my head round how it’s come to this, totally understand they can’t see it due to it being in ducts etc but such a shocker. I have small breasts, I don’t think they can do more than 5cm so if 4 doesn’t clear it... my family don’t want to know the details, and don’t understand that I just need to say it so it’s not bottled up inside me. They also say if I need mx to save my life I have to do it, and I totally get that. Perhaps I’m not explaining it properly, for me it’s about how I will cope with recovery if this first experience is anything to go by. My husband says just focus on being as well as I can be for the next op, and hope for good news. Any advice, tips on mind management welcome. I well know what I am facing is the easy end of the scale, my very best friend who I’ve known all my life is the other end, I’m sure she would swap places with me . Thankyou if you take the time to read all of this .
In 2015 I had wire guided excision for removal of two areas, one was 10mm medium grade DCIS the other 5mm of benign calcification. I asked for benign area to be removed for my own peace of mind. The 10mm of medium grade was actually 11mm of high grade but I did have clear margins. I have large breast, G cup, and was originally offered reduction of other breast but then they decided it wouldn't be needed as cosmetically there would be symmetry. After surgery I had 3 weeks of daily radiotherapy. I've recently had my 4 year check up and all clear so I've been very lucky so far.
Why was your neck affected by surgery? I woke with pain after surgery but they gave me some painkillers in recovery and I didn't need so much as a paracetamol afterwards.
Hi
Its hard to know what to say except to repeat hubbys words .
He is right sometimes the only way to get thru this mess is one step at a time ..one day at a time .I try not to focus too far ahead as I can't change what is going on .when you have your meetings have all your questions ready and a note taker with you. So you understand .Ask why your recovery was poor this time and how diff is next op . Just focus on what you need to feel at ease with it . Please no google you'll terrify yourself most of if is out of date anyway .
I too had calcification so know it's hard to diagnose ..only mammogram picked mine up no lump and ultra sound failed to find it .
Dispute in size because of two area one benign one changing .
I opted for masectomy because two areas together were 51mm with regards recovery from that op we all differ but recovery was good.
keeping yourself together thru this rollercoaster means looking after yourself and trying for distraction between appointments cos the waiting is the worst part . Can you manage a couple of days away or a trip to cinema anything that distracts .
Browse the threads on here and read some of the stories on profiles if you haven't already write your story up on profile it helps others taking to you .
come on here when it all too much and shout and scream as much as you want we'll listen . We also manage to have a laugh
but it definitely the right place to come for support .Your family/ friends will try but unless they been there they won't know what your brain up to . Lol
