Hi there,
I hope you're all having a good if rainy Saturday evening. I should finish chemo next month, and was thinking about a short last minute holiday if I'm able. Can I ask those of you who've had PICC lines how quickly your wound and arm heal? I don't want to affect healing of the vein (I was told that it closes up to work again?) so would swimming a week or two later be ok? I don't know if it will happen or not, but it's a really cheap time of year for them, and it would be good mentally and physically:)
Hi Londonmumof2
I can't answer your question but I noticed that your post hadn't had any responses. It's probably because the person with the right experience hasn't seen your post yet. By responding to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the page. I'm also tagging this group's Community Champion as he may be able to help you further.
I hope you're able to go away on your holiday and that you have a great time.

Thanks latchbrook ! x
Londonmumof2 I honestly don’t recall any issues with arm healing after PICC was removed! The hole itself healed almost immediately! Like when you have a blood test! I think they put on a small plaster!
You will certainly have no problem going swimming a week or two later! So get booking that holiday! Although remember you will need to give yourself time to get over your last Chemo before you go off galavanting ! Well at least past your low immunity days!
Take Care Hun, hope that helps! Xxxxx
Londonmumof2.......I didn't have any problems either when I had the Picc out after my antibiotics last year but it wasn't in for very long so I can't be sure it was typical.
However re holiday after treatment. We went away about a month after my treatment finished. We went to Italy .....to Lucca. It was a mistake. I thought I would enjoy seeing all those beautiful places but Fatigue set in. I spent a lot of time sitting outside cafes but feeling very upset that I couldn't do the things which normally I really enjoyed. My advice would be to plan to go somewhere where you can only sit out in the sun and relax.........no decisions, no cooking, .......... That way you won't notice if you're tired and you will really feel refreshed.
Hope you have a wonderful time. The real plus of booking the trip now is having something to look forward to through treatment. I did at least have that!
Love Karen
Hiya Londonmumof2
J had a chest central line - when that was removed she was told to only keep it dry for a week while it closed up.
Usually happens fairly quickly I would have thought - considering how fast pierced ears close up if you leave your earrings out ?
Take care, G n' J
Hi Londonmumof2...I can't answer about picc line but I can tell you that it's 3 weeks today since I finished chemo and I'm VERY slowly starting to feel better. The first 2 weeks I could still feel the chemo irritating my nerves. This last week the numb lips have mostly gone and the hand tremors subsiding...unless I exert myself, then it srarts again. I'm still having dull daily headaches (could be the Herceptin and not chemo) and my legs feel heavy and weak...I need to get more active and build up my leg muscles.
I had hoped to take my caravan away this weekend or next before my surgery but at this rate don't think I'll be up to it.
It's so difficult to predict how you'll feel but I'd definitely say it would have to be a very relaxing, non strenuous holiday.
