This sounds stupid, but I’m not working (off sick) with breast cancer and just going though the motions but I bored in the day as my friends/family all work. Don’t have the energy for much but any ideas would be great x

  • I was bored too! Found it really hard to concentrate on anything....I re-read the Harry Potter books....I knew the plots and they were easy to read.....and I could lose an hour or two to a bit of magic!

    Hi Kemp

I cross stitch. My mum started to do it after my dad died and I bought a magazine with a free card with silks etc in it. That was first time round 13 years ago. She did huge complicated pictures but I do smaller projects like samplers and cards. I design my own samplers for new babies finding pictures relevant to the child/family. People are always very pleased with my efforts. Most of the new Baby ones, on which I include birth details, have been framed and put on nursery walls.

I've also made seasonal things and fairy doors from flimo.

Look on pinterest there are loads of crafting ideas.

P.S. I have had surgery on both feet in the last couple of years so spent ALOT of time forced to sit on my bum, but anything creative keeps me happy. That's the primary school teacher in me.

AND you can always join us on our walks on the " walking back to happiness" thread.km on secondment at the moment though having RADs at Jimmys.

So think of this as an opportunity to try something new. You might surprise yourself.

  • Re things to do, have a look at Ethelmay's thread Anxiety buster in  Kidney cancer group.

  • Hi

i started doing jigsaws , it’s amazing how time flies plus you can listen to radio or music at the same time . I did buy a couple of new ones in the beginning but they are expensive , so visited some charity shops and that’s where I get them all now - never had any pieces missing . I would start with a 500 piece first and look on line and buy one that reminds you of holidays or pets you like . I stopped for summer but I’m going to start on a new jigsaw soon . Brilliant during the night if you can’t sleep . Good for the grey matter too .

    Take care

  • Hi Kemp 77 I know exactly what you mean. I am also off sick due to complications and fatigue had my op back in early March so it's been a long time. I don't have the energy to do much and am fed up of it.  Tried to do a little cleaning up and sorting things out in the house past couple of days and now breast is more swollen. Can't win!  I admit I am feeling sorry for myself this past week or two and also need to find a few new things to do to stop boredom!  My daughter is in college and husband at work. Summer hols were easier when my daughter was home for company. Thank goodness for weekends.

With regards to ideas I am doing a small tapestry to give to a friend which definitely fills some time and takes my mind off things.  I had thought about buying some beads and making some jewellery havent done so as yet. Hobbycraft sells beads and all the bits and pieces.

I have also been on the Open Uni site and enrolled on a free course the science of nutrition and healthy eating. It's free and you get a certificate on completion. There are loads of free courses to choose from https://www.open.edu/openlearn/

Hope you find something that will help occupy your time and you will be feeling better very soon.

    Take care

  • Hi Kemp,

I'm sad in a way to say (and don't know what your job is or how flexible your employers are) that I find it very good for me to work when I can, am lucky to work for a very flexible employer and have a great boss, and this works well for an office job.  I currently do about 50% of the normal 9 to 5 but keeps the grey matter ticking over, means I'm still in touch with my team & colleagues and is also good for me to know that I am being productive when I can (am lucky have had very few side effects so far).  I've made it very clear that I'll work on my terms and they're happy to have my years of experience to support the lovely lady who is standing in for me, so its a win-win for all.

    Just a thought..

I'm  in a similar boat. I try and space out my week. Plan little things throughout the week, meet up with anyone that's free, short walk each day - it's brilliant for my mood. I have puzzle and colour booksSleepingbrought by friends, jigsaws are great.  I can't watch too much tv as my concentrations bad and I fall asleep Sleeping. But get some good films, tv series to watch at times. Books that aren't too heavy going.

Spread out your time and don't plan too much but give yourself small tasks each day. For me it might be a housework task, an appointment or just pop out to get something.
