Hoping for your thoughts/views....
Don't have travel insurance (usually get in annually just before next holiday) and had booked flights with BA in mid Oct, since booking fights earlier this year have been diagnosed breast cancer and will be on 3rd round of EC when due to travel, 1st one tomorrow so no idea of side effects but am expecting that travel abroad may be not the best idea (or insurance will make it prohibitively expensive).
Anyhow was wondering what the likelihood of BA taking pity on me and giving a refund (for me & a pal) above their standard taxes (which is what they offer via website). Of course due to all the strike palava can't get through to talk to anyone and can't mail re refunds...great!
Thinking of going all old school and writing a letter but interested in your thoughts re success of full/some refund over & above taxes??
Thanks
Sam
Hi Sam
I was diagnosed on 17th May and due to have surgery early June. For various reasons I changed hospital and am now over halfway through neo-adjunctive FEC-T. I was due to fly to Canada on the 12th of July, I emailed them explaining I could not fly, send a copy of my diagnosis & an offer to send letter directly to them from my consultant if required. Took a little time but full refund given for myself & mum.
Worth a try, good luck (with everything!)
Deborah x
Hi Sam, I had flights booked with BA using avios in July, and when I called them the woman was really helpful and asked me to send proof of diagnosis (I'd a picture of my medical certificate on my phone and attached that, so exceptionally she waived the cancellation fees. I know that it isn't the same as I'd have had the avios refunded an HD it was only £35 in fees, but she made an exception. The best way is to DM your details on Twitter, as that team are less pressured.
At Easter I had a non- cancellable hotel room booked in Edinburgh with Premier Inn, and I called them explaining I knew it couldn't be cancelled but asked if I could change the date as I'd just been diagnosed with bc and had an appointment in London to see my surgeon when I was booked with them. She refunded me on the spot and wished me the best of luck and said to take care.
I looked at insurance for a quick trip at the end of my first chemo after I felt well from day 10 to join the rest of the family in Majorca, but I couldn't find anyone to insure me for under £50 for 4 days during chemo. I'm on my third EC now, and I know that everyone is different so you might be fine, but quite a few people feel worse as the cycles progress as blood results drop. My netrophils and wbc were borderline low this week. When I started so expect to feel a bit worse as this one progresses.
Good luck either way!
Thanks both, have since figured out to use twitter (hate social media/pride myself on being an accomplished technophobe but will use when there's a definite possibility it can come in handy and meet my practical needs!) and have had a response from them for more details.
Feeling optimistic so thanks again for fab advice.
Sam
Good luck and let us know how you get on. x
Just before my diagnosis we were given a voucher for dinner, bed & breakfast at a particularly nice hotel that expired while I was having treatment. When I rang and explained the nice young man didn't draw breath and extended indefinitely. Once chemo was all done we had a lovely time
I generally manage to find the silver lining on the cloud and in a way its good that people who haven't been touched either directly or indirectly assume the worst, in that its a death sentence or that chemo nearly kills you, and whilst I'm aware for some this is the case I will be,using it, and think we should use it, to our full advantage to make sure that we don't suffer any further re enjoyment, financially or otherwise.
So am glad you're a) done with your cancer journey and managed to travel to many lovely places b) a positive person (we need more like us around) and c) got your lovely hotel stay.
BA hopefully know I've got time and my hands and am more than prepared for a fight! Now I've got their attention that's it!
Thanks for message Busty,
Sam
