New and scared

Hi, and thanks for reading . After finding a small lump high on my chest (so high I didn't think it was breast tissue) I recently had a mammogram, (which showed clear) and an ultrasound performed by a radiographer .  She is very experienced and is concerned it is cancer, which the breast specialist agrees with .  The ultrasound has shown a 15mm tumour which appears to have not spread to lymph nodes.  Specialist was incredibly positive and has said I will have surgery to remove the lump, and a couple of lymph nodes to be on the safe side, followed by radiotherapy.  So far I have, after the initial shock, great news .  I had a biopsy the following day and get the results on Friday .  I know this is a tough ask without being able to give the full diagnosis, but I wondered if anyone was able to give me any advice about chemo.

I should have mentioned, sorry, I'm 44 and pre menopausal.   I'm also admittedly vain!  The specialist mentioned that post op and radiotherapy , chemo may also be required, and possibly hormone therapy.   I'm well aware that I should be over the moon, and I am, but I'm also terrified of the thought of losing my long hair, and my wee body.  I know it's not that big of a deal in the long run, I lost my mother to lung cancer a year ago, 6 months after she was diagnosed,  so I fully appreciate that I've been given a gift.  I was just hoping for a bit of positivity.  I'm incredibly lucky to have incredible support, so I should be grateful,  but I'm angry and scared.

Apologies for the rant, and thank you x

Hi ya! Rant away it’s so scary waiting but you’ve come to the right place I think.

I had no lymph node involvement according to ultrasound but  due to the type of cancer by the time I had surgery it had spread to 3, but at least it was found, apparently mine is very rare so you’ll most likely be fine. The waiting is the absolute pits. Once you get more results through a treatment plan will form and you will feel better.

similarly I was told initially op rads and hormone therapy but now chemo and either node clearance or more rads have been added. However the chemo is to prevent a reoccurrence only which does keep me sane. If you do have chemo it’s really doable and certainly manageable. Please bear in mind you only read about ppl who are struggling, the rest are getting on with living! For instance many of us carry on working, I still run, work, look after my grandson, go away on breaks, play out and eat out.

About your hair, please consider cold capping it does work despite what you read. I cut mine short bit there are many ladies who keep theirs long- there’s a paxman Facebook group which is worth a look. Don’t let anyone scare you off, at least try it. Being premenopausal will be a factor in your treatment, I know being post menopause (just) did.

so very sorry to read about your mum, I can’t imagine how you feel xxxxxxxx

Thank you so much Ruthie, just getting a reply here somehow helps a little.  Sorry to hear about your own journey, hope all is well with you xxx

I might be worrying about nothing, but I just can't help obsessing about it!  I'm pretty sure I can handle anything thrown at me, bar losing my hair and gaining weight, wow, how shallow am I? GrinSweat smile

I've always loved a bit of glamour and I've always liked to look my best, in the grand scheme of things it's really unimportant,  but it's just part of who I've always been .  I like working out, and wasn't sure if I'd still be able to, so you've put my mind at rest on that front.  I'd read a little about cold caps, seemed pretty negative, but, again you've given me something positive,  so thank you so Much!

    Xxx

  • My hair is longer than shoulder length (armpit length if that makes sense) and I've about half left with no patches on the top, only 2 underneath at either side where it was itchy and I rubbed it a lot. The follicles get itchy mid-cycle! I had EC number 3 today and without cold cap I'd have been bald a couple of weeks ago. Not everyone gains weight. I'm exactly the same at this weight check as the other two despite eating a lot of carbs in the first week each time to deal with the nausea. The other two weeks were better. In my first cycle I felt normal from day 10-21, last time bearable from those days, but everyone is different, and the symptoms are different each time too.x

  • Sorry find yourself  here.  I only had surgery and radiotherapy as I had DCIS - see my profile . No hormone therapy needed.   Good luck for results x

Thanks for taking the time xxx

I'm really hoping I get your diagnosis! How surreal to even be thinking about the best type of breast cancer, can't get my head round it

Hope I'll have a clearer picture on Friday xxx

Thank you,  and hope you're good xxx

My hair is down to my waist, but it's mostly extensions lol  my own hair is about the same length as yours, but it's really fine, hence the extensions  I can't afford to lose any more

    Joy

I'll definitely be getting these cold caps , thanks for the advice

Great to here about the weight too, you've cheered me up xxx

  • I was clueless about different types at the time .  I know I was lucky but it annoys me when family /friends use that term when they want it to feel better about your diagnosis!!!

My hubby is lucky though!!!  He had emergency sigmoid colectomy a few months ago.  Surgeon said it was diverticulitis which is a benign condition but he wanted to do open surgery as their tests had not given clear picture of colon.  Warned small chance of cancer.  However last week his other consultant for a different issue was surprised they hadn’t done keyhole surgery  so called up CT colonoscopy results and report and showed us.  It stated was most likely cancer and that lymph nodes needed checking as they looked inflamed.   So that’s why he had surgery within a week!  Thankfully it was benign but he had one  of a scar !!!

What a time You've had! Obviously it's great your hubby is OK,  but that amount of worry, again, Jeezo.

I suppose like the majority of people I was so shocked, because you're just not prepared.  The lump I found is in that area between your breast and clavicle,  I didnt even realise it was part of my Breast!  I went to my GP as this wee annoying thing hadn't went away, when she mentioned the word breast and said I'd need to see a specialist in was genuinely surprised.

I am very lucky as my husband managed to get me an appointment privately the next day.  Funny how your socialist ideas go out the window when you're terrified lol (we are not loaded by any means, my mum's death last year was in part because she wasn't checked for cancer for a whole year after she complained of back pain, so my hubby wasn't messing about, health is wealth as he says)  but again I was fully expecting to be told I was overreacting to a cyst.

That day I had the ultrasound and the next morning the biopsy, so again,  I'm very lucky that things have moved so quickly.  I think when you leave an appointment though you should be banned from googling anything Lol!  Instead of getting on with things I've become obsessed with every possible outcome.

Take care, and thanks again xxx

  • Hi

Great news for hubby I had a resection of the Lower Sigmoid area bout 10 year ago because off Diverticular . Hope hubby alright now . I still have a very demanding bowel but nowhere as bad . At least the blockage gone .

  • Hi that great to hear. Hubby didn’t even know he has a blockage.  Found by chance when they did CT scan after he fell.  There was a 5cm section of inflammation causing the blockage.  He’s recovered well but because they did a 14” incision up his stomach cutting through his abdominal muscles its impacted his recovery from broken back!  He’s getting there though just creaking a lot !!! He’s never been in any meds for it as told years ago he had IBS due to stress!
