I've recently undergone a LUG flap reconstruction and can't seem to find anyone else who's had the same. It's similar to the TUG flap (ie tissue and muscle taken from the thigh) but it's a different incision where they take an L shaped segment which goes across the groin/upper thigh and then almost all the way down the inner thigh to just above the knee.

I had it 5 weeks ago and am really struggling with pain and tightness in my leg which doesn't seem to be resolving.

I would love to speak to anyone who's had this surgery to find out about their recovery and if I'm worrying about nothing.

This was done at Queen Victoria hospital in East Grinstead.

Thank you xx

Sorry I cant help you. But I found the Someone Like Me Service at Breast Cancar Care very good. They put me in touch with people who had the same diagnosis as me, a failed DIEP reconstruction etc.

  • Hi,

I had a LUG reconstruction 10 weeks ago and am also experiencing leg pain but below my knee rather than on my scar. Did your pain go away? My surgeon said it might be to do with nerves and them coming back to life.

Did you ever find anyone else that has had this procedure? I can't find much about it just by googling it!!

    Thanks in advance!

You could try messaging Jives68 direct.

Or contact the Someone Like Me service at Breast Cancer Now as they may be able to put you in touch with someone who has experienced this.

I'm about to have a LUG reconstruction 17 Oct. How do you feel now? Do you still have pain? Can you do all your normal activities?

    HI ,

I am so sorry to hear that your pain lasted so long after surgery. I have been offered this same operation,

How is your satisfaction with the operation now ?

    Regards

    Helen

    Hi Helen,

I have now had the LUG reconstruction and am very happy I had it done. When you're quite slim the volume of the reconstructed breasts is significantly better than with a traditional TUG flap so especially for me having both breasts reconstructed I felt like this was the right surgery for me.

I don't know if you had any other surgeries but for me compared to my mastectomy 2 years earlier this was significantly harder. I thought I could go back to work (from home) after 2 weeks and I couldn't as it was too uncomfortable to sit on a chair, your legs will feel very tight for the first 5/6 weeks, then it will slowly get better. Just prepare to not do much for 6 weeks! I was ok sitting down after 3 weeks, started running again after 6 weeks and was back to my pre-surgery running pace after 9 weeks. It's definitely doable but for someone who hates doing nothing and being independent those first 3/4 weeks were definitely a challenge (the first 2 weeks I could hardly go to the toilet or have a shower on my own).

Please let me know if you have any further questions, feel free to message me privately!

    Kind regards, Michelle

    Dear Michelle,

thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. What you have said has really pit my mind at rest about go8b* ahead wit( this operation. I was very worried about the effect on my leg. You sound a very active person and it’s great to hear you are back to your previous running. Would you say you notice any difference in the strength of your legs?  Many thanks for your kindness. All the best Helen

  • Hi Michelle,

As you had a two year delayed reconstruction, can I ask how things are looking aesthetically? I realise after a mastectomy we have very little original skin so I’m wondering how much the new skin manages to blend in if at all possible. And of course, the new skin would I assume be more hairy than the original skin.

Hi Samaa, the skin from my inner thighs was used and there is a bit of a difference in colour yes. There are also a few dark hairs which I can just pluck out when they come up. I wouldn't say it looks completely natural but with the nipple tattoo on it looks sort of normal? Hope that helps!

  • Thank you.
I wonder if there are any pearls of wisdom you can share for coping those first 6weeks? I realised today I’m going to need to buy some comfy trousers instead of my jeans.

Im pritty nervous about how painful and restricted walking etc will be. Did it take long until you were able to walk at least 10-20mins?

And I wonder if you stayed in a hotel/B&B and had to isolate before the operation?

Any advice would be so appreciated.x
