Hello to all of you wonderful people, who are currently going through radiotherapy and welcome to August's Radiotherapy Chat.

This is a place where you can offer support , ask for advice, receive support and just query anything involving radiotherapy. A couple of quick tips, if you're driving to your radiotherapy appointments each day, or any time, ask if your hospital offers free parking for people going through treatment, or if they have a voucher for a discount off parking fees, which a lot of hospitals do offer. Also, try to keep the area moisturised with a fragrance free lotion, to help with soreness. You'll find want more tips along the way on this thread.

For more tips, heres our Radiotherapy Tips Page and I'm sure you all have some of your own tips to share, and ones that people post that you will find useful.

Heres also A link from the Macmillan Information pages, which also includes a helpful video that some of you may want to have a look at.

This is a link to July's chat for those of you who would like to see how the thread works, or to just have a look back at last months chat and see what you can find out from others. It will be locked shortly from replies, but you can still take a look.

Whatever reason you find yourselves here, just remember you're all so strong, amazing and simply the bravest. You've got me again this month! And we are always here for you. You'll always have your Macmillan family here for you, which includes other members who have helped you and been there for you.

Lots of love, hugs, light and healing to each and every one of you,

Alex xxxx

    Hi,

i had my first rads yesterday. Went ok. Must say breast already feels a bit sore/achy. Not the skin, more inside. My gp prescribed the R1 R2 cream and gel. I also had a physio class snd have some exercises to do.

Be good to hear from anyone else doing rads. I am having 15. Also, anyone else having theirs at the Christie?

    xx

Number three yesterday. Skin is ok, sensitive but no difference in colour. Boob is sore, it feels a bit like it did after lumpectomy. Very tired already although i do have existing illnesses which cause fatigue as well. The treatment itslef is no problem. I do feel a bit odd/out of sorts for about 15 mins after so i have a sit down before driving home.

    Hi

seems to be quiet on this thread this month.  Glad you are coping with treatment but sorry you are feeling so tired.  Thus on top of everything else doesn't help.   Keep creaming up and hopefully your skin will come well.  I am fair skinned and have a lot of scars on new boob as I didn't heal well.  But I managed and had nothing worse than an itchy rash at the end.  I took anti histamine and used some e45 anti itch cream and I was fine.

    Keep going.  You're doing great.

    Hiya

I finished my radiotherapy a while ago now but when i first started having it i would get headache and feel a bit sick afterwards. I mentioned it on here and a few people told me to drink more and to make sure i'd eaten and it worked. So maybe try drinking a bit more before you go in and see if that helps. I used aqueous cream to keep my skin soft and luckily although it looked really red underneath i didn't have any breaks in my skin.

I was lucky and never really felt tired and now its all over with i seem to have more energy than i've ever had.

Hope the rest go well and it will be over with before you know it xx

Hi thescriptfan, thanks. I am drinking loads but i will up it. Yes eating before and after seems to help. Thanks for the reply. So far so good. I have just been called in for no. 4!!

  • I drank a lot of water during my Rads, I do anyway but then more so.

I was very lucky with rads, no pain, only a bit in my shoulder towards the end of treatment, no boob pain, no tiredness, no redness of the areas (I was zapped in two places in breast area and also neck due to lymph involvement) no broken skin etc.

I just used Sanex for washing and E45 for moisturising.

Wishing you all the best with your treatments x

Hi, i have just had 5/15 today. I am pretty sore inside and getting swollen. They suggested going bra less at home. I have some bra extenders i can use which helped today.

It does dehydrate, i am drinking almost double what i usually do. A full litre in the hour or so before treatment and a litre after in addition. I find the more i drink the better i feel. I am certainly not weeing that much out lol.

I am taking ibuprofen which helps with the pain and swelling. I have described it like healing from the lumpectomy but going backwards; a bit sorer and more swollen each day.
