Hi , I've been taking letrezole for 8 months now and the side affects are awful, flushes and sweating being the worst,  some women I  know have stopped taking itfor better quality of life,  do I or don't I continue to take them???

  • Hello Giveup,

It’s your decision of course, but do consult with your team, especially talk it through with your BCN.

I'm on Letrozole too, for about 18 months now, and each summer has been tough with flushes but I guess I’m getting more used to managing them now. Humidity is the real killer, I’ve found.

I am sticking to it though as my bc was 8/8 oestrogen fed. And I’ve found sticking to the same brand helps with s/e’s too, mine is Accord.

A hand held fan, rechargeable, or an old fashioned one, helps lots. I’ve also saved hubs’ old hankies as they are so old and soft they make a great face-wipe to dry off!

  • Take advise first as these treatments are to prevent us getting anymore cancer.  They often advise taking it at a different time of day as sometimes this helps with side effects, worth a try. I bought a tower type fan at the weekend for my mum from Argos they are £29.99 dont take up too  much room and are quieter than many with timer as well.

  • Hi

I've been taking Letrazole for about 3 years. Please try different brands as the side effects differ. Take water and antiperspirant with you everywhere you go! I take my meds at night and when it's really hot I put a cold wet flannel on my neck if I can't sleep!

Take each day at a time...

Hi there, I’ve only been taking Letrozole 3 months I can handle the hot flushes but the night sweats are horrendous.

I know it’s been very warm but I’ve never experienced any like it. I’m awake at least every two hrs if not more!

Going back to see oncologist later this month and I’m certainly going to mention it.

Let us know how you get on x

Hi, I've been talking Letrozole for 4 months and the hot flushes and night sweats have just started to lessen a lot,. So I'm hopeful they keep decreasing. I bought a fab hand held fan which also has a stand and is rechargeable by USB so no batteries needed. One charge lasts ages. Had 3 speeds and is very sturdy. Called vision tech from Amazon. I also bought a cold mat from them which I keep on my bed and just pop it underneath my back when a flush starts. It really takes the heat out. I got one for my armchair too.  Hope you find these work for you too x

  • Hiya,

Like moomy I have also stuck to the accord brand for just over 2 years now. To begin with I felt like a 90 year old! In the morning I did the robot walking down the stairs and I did have a few hot flushes. Now I have to say the side effects are minimal, I hardly notice anything. I do think that it is a case of your body has to adjust. My bc was also 8/8 oestrogen fed and as I am still in my forties, I want to do everything I can to prevent a recurrence.

I found exercise really helped with the aching joints.

  • Hi I’ve been taking letrozole for 5 years and found TIVA brand suited me I still had aches and other side effects  I was told I needed to stay on for another 5 years which I was reluctant to do my oncologist agreed to a break of 3 months so I could see how good I felt. I did feel less pain and less fatigue but after 2 months I went back on it as I started to think what if I was dying and they said if only you had taken letrozole for 5 more years x

Hi, not sure I understand what you mean by " if only you had taken letrezole for 5 more years ", if you only had a 2 month break. Are they saying that its long enough for it to be out of your system and to be at risk of it coming back?

  • I've just been told today that I will now only be taking Letrazole for 5 years, not 10! I'm very upset and I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it yet. I'm wondering if the NHS is trying to save money..... I live in London so maybe it's a postcode lottery?!
