  • Hi

Here's something I found online once.

    Tips for reducing itching

If you’re experiencing an excessively itchy wound accompanied with thick or off-colored drainage, you may want to see a clinician to ensure there isn’t another problem. For normal irritation, there are actions you can take to reduce the itching, though you should check with a health care professional before changing your recovery plan. Discuss some of these options with your clinician:

    • Wash gently with soap and water to remove any dead cells that may be causing irritation.
    • Protect the affected area with a basic wound dressing to stop clothes from rubbing against it and to keep potentially harmful bacteria out.
    • Use a cool compress for a short period of time to numb itching.
    • Anti-itch creams may be used if the itching persists and becomes too much to handle.

I actually have scars elsewhere from a road accident and I use "Epimax Cream" prescribed from my doctor.

    Best wishes,

    Hi

Are you able to apply anything to the actual scar? If not, this will probably work just applied around the area.....No I am not on commission, but I keep mentioning this product because, for me, it is a little miracle.

My 'itching' isn't from a wound (nor allergy... but have them too!) Its one of my fibromyalgia symptoms. Like fiery ants working feverishly under the skin. It's as if the nerves are permanently switched on and I'd give anything for 10 seconds of relief. I tried lots of things and surprisingly the stuff that works is a menthol based analgesic blue gel.

Brand name things like Ice or Freeze and comes in big tubs and is available in pound type shops and The Range etc

As its so cheap you can slap loads on and instantly benefit...smells cool n fresh too n if doesn't work hasn't done too much damage to you or your pocket Slight smile

    Take care

I'm not sure about direct to wound but I'm sure I could try it around where I still have some swelling . The  Cool compress idea has helped a little but it starts itching again  soon after removing  .

Thanks for answering , I will get some and try it

  • Hi Pipsqueak,

by now your wound should be pretty well healed, are you able or allowed (ask BCN) to gently massage it? Certainly around it? There is an awful lot of deep healing that will also be giving these itches and gentle massage as and when your BCN feels it’s worthwhile, will help. I would suspect the itching is at least partially due to nerves having been cut in the op, I had that too, still do occasionally; a couple of days back I desperately wanted to scratch my nipple - but I haven’t got one! It was just a really definite irritation where the nipple maybe had a nerve supply that had gone in the op. It went away....

as a former Occupational Therapist who treated amputees as a part of general medical ward work, we advised gentle massage over the stump to persuade the nerve endings that they had a different function now! This is rather similar in a way....and I’ve found gentle massage in the early stages, but gradually a bit more as healing is good and definite, has helped me. Use a cream or whatever you find helps.
