Rheumatoid arthritis triggered by chemotherapy?

Since having chemotherapy last year, followed by herceptin jabs, followed by letrozole, I have suffered with painful joints. Worst in hands, feet, knees elbows, sore muscles in legs too. I have heard arthritis can be triggered by chemotherapy and infection, I was hospitalised twice with neutropenic sepsis during chemo. Has anyone had this? I’m going back to oncologist next week having stopped all meds apart from morphine for pain. Can it be cured? Can it be stopped?

    Hi

i can't answer your question but just wanted to send hugs and empathise.  I now have mobility issues, no pain apart from in achilles tendins particularly after inactivity, which I think have been brought on by chemo (see my profile). My oncologist doesn't think it is cancer related  . . . . But i was fine until they started teating me for cancer.  A dear friend can't understand how I was well when i had cancer and now i don't have it any more I am a wreck.

Hope you get some answers and some cures xxx

Thanks so much AnnJac, it is strange that we end up cancer free and so grateful for that but actually feel worse on a day to day basis! We are still here though, and not everyone gets the chance to feel longer term side effects so I’m not complaining !

    Hope your mobility improves,

    xx

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are both unwell after chemo and subsequent drugs. Being triple negative, I didn't have the follow up drugs but during the taxotere chemo, I did develop severe neuropathy which resulted in a visit to the physio.

This is the interesting bit.......he told me although oncology won't recognise the connection......he ( and he's discussed this with colleagues) sees so many patients with problems after chemo that they are sure there's a link.

    Food for thought....

Hope you are not in too much pain this weekend.

    Love Karen

Thanks for the info, it must be linked because it’s driven by the immune system and my chemo had such an impact on my immune system  that it seems patently obvious to me. I’m not sure how common it is though.

Will update after oncology visit see what mine says.

thanks again for taking time to respond.

    Tingk

  • Good morning

i finished treatment last August , annual mammogram was clear and I was given the great result of No evidence of cancer . I developed very sore hips and hands ( I also have peripheral neuropathy) oncologist arranged CT scan and on -1st  July I was given the all clear . BUT I still had very painful hips and hands . I read up about going to a chiropractor . I. Seen her on Friday and she said chemotherapy tightens up everything in the body and that lots of her clients who have had chemo report arthritis like joint pain but she says it will go in time with help .

she found my right leg was 5mm shorter than my left and that was what was causing the pain . She worked on me - nothing nasty ! Just gentle movements and stretching , she also worked on my hands but told me hands can take a year to fix . Today’s Sunday and I got up to the bathroom with no pain in my hips . Grinning

I am  going back this Friday so I can keep you posted . BUT I needed to tell her I had been given the all clear by oncologist and that I had had a CT scan . So ask your oncologist first.

    Take care

That’s really interesting Ruby Rose! I’m so glad you are getting better. I’m definitely going to mention it to the oncologist next week and see what she says. Hope your improvements continue Heart

  • Letrozole causes joint pain and can also cause Achilles tendinitis and the appearance of ganglions. It’s down to the oestrogen reducing drugs affecting collagen. Tamoxifen can do the same as I suffer.
hoping your oncologist can recommend a way to reduce your side effects.
