Late effects from breast cancer surgery

Hi again, I am 7 months out from surgery and on Anastrozol, calcium/D and Alendronic Acid once a week.

I have been reading some of the posts about Anastrozol which makes me see that aches and pains are to be expected, but I am pretty bummed at the extreme changes that have happened to my body in just 6 months. I know I’m 65 and should expect stuff to start breaking down but since the surgery, radiotherapy and medications it feels like my body is on a downward spiral. There are pains in my ankles, arms, wrists, knees, fingers and a tightness in the back of my left leg when I walk. My knees hurt when I sit down or get up. At night I wake up and my finger joints feel jammed and there is deep gnawing pain in my left hip joint in my back. I am fighting the urge to stay in bed half the day and feel very fatigued. I’m hoping to see the oncologist in the next few weeks but it’s hard not to get concerned with such a radical change. Sorry this is such a moan fest and I’m grateful for a cancer free life but I’m a bit fed up. K

    Hi there ,

Hormone therapy takes its toll on a lot of us unfortunately. I've been on Letrozole (Fermara) for about 10 months and yours sounds like a check list of my aches and pains, right down to the night awakenings with finger joint pain (I now close my fists before I go to sleep because if I keep my hands open it's more painful).

I have found a couple of things that seem to ease the pain, movement - (but we have to stop sometimes) heat - everything improves after a warm shower and a daily supplement that's called Normorelax, it contains amongst other things Magnesium, Triptofano, Boswellia, Niacin, Vitamin B2 and D, Riboflavin. Anyway, I've been taking it for quite a few months now and more recently I have less pain - it has taken a while though!

(I also take calcium, vitamin D and have 6 monthly Prolia injections).

You must explain all that you wrote above to your oncologist and get your life back!!!

All the best and let us know how you get on xxx

    P.S. I'm 15 years younger than you!

  • Hi,

oh dear, join the aches club! But it may be worth talking to your team, it seems that some do better on other AI’s (aromatase inhibitors) than others, I’m on Letrozole and at 74 I wasn’t feeling my age but am moreso now. I find taking supplements does help, I have taken Loratidine for a few years as I began Alendronic Acid as a result of being diagnosed with osteopenia, then osteoporosis. I also take glucosamine with chondroitin and began Vitamin B12 sublingual, too which also seems to help. Hubs says i’m just filling the tills of alternative suppliers! But if it helps, then do it provided you’ve checked it out with BCN.

I also find exercise helps, I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it’s been proven that gentle regular exercise does help the fatigue and pains from cancer treatment. Walking is one of the best! (Says she who did lots of gardening and housework before a 3 mile walk and aches a bit!)

    keep posting, it helps!

    hugs xxx

  • Thanks so much, it helps to know I’m not going crazy and the supplements sounds promising. Yes, I will talk about it to him. x

  • Hi

I'm on Anastrozole and calcium/D (not Alendronic), but I found that the brands of Anastrozole make a huge different to me.  I was given another brand (can't remember it now) for one month, having been on Accord and within 2 days I had exactly the same side effects as you describe.  I had some Accord left and swapped back - 2 days later these side effects were gone.  I tested them again a couple of months later and the same thing happened so I know it was the brand that was causing it.

My doctor has it on my prescription slip "Accord brand only" now and I always keep a month's supply in just in case the pharmacy runs out and has delays in getting them in.  The coatings in the tablets have different ingredients in them, so it's worth perhaps trying different brands before you look at changing the AI - they put us on the one that is the best for us.

With Accord, I only very occasionally get an achy thumb and a stiff knee and I find that cycling stops the knee stiffness/pain.

    Kindest wishes,

  • I have seen it mentioned about the brands a number of times now and Accord seems to be the one with the least problems. Thanks for the info. Take care x
