What happens after treatments...

Hi All,

I have been thinking about what happens once planned treatment is over. I didn’t look too far ahead because i  have been taking it one step at a time since diagnosis, it was mastectomy, node clearance, and then came chemo, I’m over halfway through radiotherapy 9/15 done.

Saw the oncol yesterday at the rads review and everything is going well at the moment, I guess I then started to think about what’s next.

Will I get more ct scans or a mammo to check everything?

  • Hi,

Well done.....you are so near the end of treatment now and with the oncologist's pleasing report, things should begin to improve soon. Certainly you will find more energy, (although it may take longer than you imagine so don't be disappointed if it isn't instsant.....) although you might also find you change your priorities for living as I know lots of post bc people say that.

In terms of follow up, I think each medical area is different. Some see their surgeon regularly, have yearly mammograms, others have regular follow ups with their bc nurses plus mammograms, whilst still others seem to have to chase up follow up appointments. For myself, I have no complaints. Three monthly check ups and yearly mammogram/ ultrasound with promise of yearly mammogram/ ultrasound for the rest of my life. It has been reassuring.

So, sorry not to be more helpful but I'm sure you'll be properly monitored or have access to it, and will be here encouraging the 'nearly finished treatment' many years from now.

    Take care

    Love Karen

  • Hi. I have had a previous cancer journey (thyroid cancer) and am currently on another (breast cancer). Whenever I’m contemplating what’s to come after treatment I read a marvellous article by Dr Peter Harvey, After Treatment Finishes - Then What. This is a great starting point and has helped me enormously to find a way through in the past and is relevant again now. You can search the links on this site or ask one of the champions.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment and going forwards.

    Kind regards

    Liz

You cannot change the past. LOOK FORWARD.

    Hi and ,

Thank you both for replying. For your advice and kind words, it’s much appreciated.

I feel my energy levels were pretty good through Chemo, by the last treatment it wasn’t too good, but I feel better good really now.

I walked about 5-6 miles a day at the start of Chemo, by the end of Chemo it was 3ish on good days. I walk about 4-6 now, so I’m getting there.

Im on the Optima trial, so I vaguely remember something about a 10 year follow up with regular check ups,  but no idea what their concept of regular is!

I guess I want to know if I get more ct scans to check everything is ok.

I will ask my oncologist on next visit, I know I’m being seen in Breast Clinic as well soon to see my surgeon and Breast Nurse, I think I’ll been able to take more in now when I seen them, as it didn’t really register with me, I heard Breast Cancer, surgery etc, but the rest is a bit of a blur especially as it was 9 months ago.

Hooe you are both as well as you can be.

    Gentle hugs x x
