Hi Had my first round of chemo Docetaxol and Cyclophosphamide.
I was admitted to hospital for 5 days with neutropenic fever. Next time I will have the injections to try to boost neutrophils .
Anyone had this and did it work? Thanks
J
Hi Goldfinch
Really sorry you've had such a rough ride with your first round.
I'm on the same regime + Herceptin. I have just the one injection which I give myself in my stomach 24 hours after chemo to boost the white cells. I've had two rounds of chemo and so far, so good. So yes, it does seem to work.

I've just had - on Monday - my 1st cycle of Docetaxel and Carboplatin. I was supposed to have the injections - but they forgot. I rang up and was told to pop in and collect the prescription today - to self inject.
However, they then changed their minds and decided not to give them to me. They said to wait and see how I got on without them.
They might give them to me next time if I am bad / poorly this time.
I"ll let you know if I do manage without them
I hope I dont get an infection and end up in hospital like you did. I hope you are ok now.
I would be interested to see what other replies you get
As a preventative against the bone pain many folk get with this, it’s often useful to begin Claritin (genetic name Loratidine) tablets the day before. It’s an antihistamine but is widely prescribed in the USA for this very purpose.
hope all goes well

Hi Carmol ,
Thanks that is so encouraging - yes I'm on Herceptin too. I saw the oncologist today and she said I might get another reaction but this will lessen the chance. So fingers crossed for next time.
I think I'm going to have and injection every day for five days. I had a practice in the hospital as they were giving me it there too and not as hard as I thought.
Hope you continue to do OK

Hi LFP,
Thanks so much and I hope you get through without incident. The hospital were brilliant - went to A&E and they followed guidelines exactly - was on antibiotics within 45 minutes, lots of checks including chest X-ray. I would have come home a day sooner but had a temp spike just as I was about to be discharged
I'm absolutely fine now, pretty much back to normal

Thanks Moomy, a good tip.

Thanks Ruby Rose,
Sorry you suffered the aches and pains. I had the injections while I was in hospital and no reactions but maybe because I was just sitting around. I'm pleased it worked for you and hoping it will work for me too! Hope you are doing OK now

Hi Goldfinch77
I had the same - admitted after first round of T to hospital twice over a week with neutropenic sepsis, evidenced by temp spike. I was in for one night, then out for 2 then back in for 4. However, was fine for the next 2 rounds of T - well, 'fine' might be stretching it :-) but I didn't get the neutropenia again. I had to do the GCSF injections for the first few days each time. Just find a chubby bit, give it a pinch and you won't feel it. Anecdotally, I seem to have noticed from what others have said on this site, that you might get the neutropenia on your first go but not after as your body gets used to what's hit it. Hope so anyway.
Best of luck,
Linda xx

Thanks Aspen,
This is really encouraging! Sorry you had to go through a bad first round too. It's good to know I'm not the only one!!
Hope you continue to do well.
