Hi I’m 12 months down the road since my breast cancer diagnosis in January 2018 I had 3 surgeries in fairly quick succession the last one being the end of April 2018 .... I am now on medication for the next 5 years those being anastrazole once a day and a zoladex injection every 3 months however I am now experiencing joint pain in my fingers ankles knees and hips and also swollen fingers I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what can be done or anything that can be taken to alleviate these symptoms

  • Hi

I can't help with the Zoladex but I'm on Anastrozole.  Every now and again I get an achy knee or wrist etc and I tend to just pop a Ibuprofen.   However, my side effects are negligible in comparison to you.  I make sure I have the same brand on my prescription slip (Accord) as other brands badly affected me and I take it first thing in the morning with a pint of squash.

You may want to enter Letrozole in the search bar as there are far more posts re this AI than there is Anastrozole and other ladies may have been on a similar cocktail of Zoladex and Letrozole -  or others might have found something better to help the swelling/ pain.

By answering, I am bumping your post up as you've slipped to the second page and there may be ladies around now who can help more than I can.

    Kindest wishes,

    Hi lesleyhelen

Thanks very much for the reply I certainly will make sure I have the same brand on my prescription each time never thought that different makes may make the symptoms worse..... I’ll also enter letrozole into the search bar and see if anyone there has the same issue with the combination

    best wishes

  • Sadly letrozole etc are renowned for removing oestrogen  from your body which therefore leads to aching joints. They are a protection against recurrence and one some people chose NOT to go with as they have a low percentage effect. I’m no doc just what I’ve learmt from here and going through the poop

Vitamin D tablets are often prescribed by the onco to help the joints

Other suggestions are Cod liver oil, glucosamine sulphate

Plus keep active to keep the joints moving

Yes I know .... keep bleeping g active when you ache and feel like poop PoopPoopPoop Look at low impact stuff like swimming and aquafit

Equally check in with your NC nurse or onco if you are struggling mightily

    Good wishes

    Hi leolady56

    • thankyou for your message I’m already taking vitamin D daily and trying to keep as active as I can under the circumstances but I’ll look into taking cod liver oil and/ or glucosamine tablets
  • Hi @Deetee (doesn't seem to be tagging you today for some reason)

I am certain different brands make a huge difference.  I orginally had Accord and had little or no side effects.  One month I was prescribed a different brand and within a couple of days my wrist, knee, ankle etc were aching really badly. Luckily I had some Accord brand left, so for the next 3 days I swapped to Accord - day 2 no aches.  So on day 4 I tried the other brand again and within 2 days - bang! back to aches all over again.  So, I wrote to my Doctor and asked for him to put "Accord Brand Only" on my prescription slip and I always have a month's supply in stock, just in case my pharmacy can't get it straight away.

Although when you look at the list of ingredients there is no difference - the coatings that the tablets come in are very different.  So, it's worth asking to try different brands and test them just like I did and see if any make any difference to you.  I was just very lucky that the first brand I was on was the one that had very little in the way of side effects.  (I do get some aches on Accord - but not sure if this is if I've done a bit too much - e.g. decorating the house this last week and my wrist was aching badly at the end of each day).

  • Hi i have just been reading your experience with Accord brand of Letrozole and you could have been writing about me!!!!

I have been on Letrozole for about a year now and remember reading about others who complained abot the difference in brands. I have had all the usual SE but all are manageable UNTIL ....... the paharmacy gave me a brand called Cipia (EU) Limited. Never had them before but didn't think anyting of it until 2 days after the first of them and it hit so hard!!!! Like you, aches all over, could hardly walk down the stairs in  the morning. Put it off for a few days just thought having a few bad days but then it suddenly hit me about the brand. I also had Accord or Dr Reddys previously and always OK, so checked ingredients on both and yes, it is the coatings that are different and must make the difference. I ditched the Cipia went back to Accord and all was well again (she says with a sigh of relief!!).

I have asked my pharmacist for Accord in the future and so far he has obliged.

    Best wishes
