Good morning everyone. Diagnosis at stage 3 yesterday, 5.5cm lump & several lymph so mastectomy & full lymph strip on 11th.  I am in a lot of pain, nodes and breast, inverted nipple so very sore. GP gave me codeine last week but not helping, constant ache, does anyone have idea of what would help?

I am sure this has been asked a trillion times but the anxiety over spreading in the 3 week wait for surgery is off the scale, will the wait really make no difference? 5.5cm in my consultants words ‘very large’. Feels huge to me, I want to be in next week!

It’s my birthday today - bit of a rubbish pressie TBH!

  • Hi Daisy,

So sorry you had such a rotten birthday. I'm answering because there is no need for you to be in pain in this day and age. You need stronger or different type of painkiller. Codeine is rubbish.

As it is Saturday go to Boots chemist and ask to speak to pharmacist privately  and explain the situation.  The strongest over the counter painkiller is called PARAMOL it is in a black box and is mix of paracetamol and Dyhdrocodine which is synthetic morphine. It's for short term use only, this is short term and for a valid reason.

Obviously rebook GP and be insistent about better analgesic. Maybe the tumour is pressing on something causing this ache.

It's not right you're in pain with all the cancer stuff to face. Sending hugs let us know how you go on xxx

    Morning first things first :O)

I guess i'm lucky i have always had every faith in my team so never worried about times between procedures. I'm sure your surgeon wouldn't leave you until the 11th if they didn't think it was fine to do so. At the end of the day they are there to make you better, so try not to worry too much, i know its easier said than done.

My lump was 6cm when i was first diagnosed with some lymph nodes involved. I was lucky though never had any pain, in fact i didn't even know it was there. As for the pain have you tired a hot water bottle, i find sometimes heat works. Don't have it too hot though you don't want to be burning yourself.

Keep talking to us and i hope you have as good a day as you possibly can xx

  • Hi Snowys Mum

Thanks so much for your advice, I have indeed been to Boots and have a little black box on my passenger seat as we speak!

    Really appreciate your help xx

  • Thanks so much, it’s early days and every little niggle is sending me in to blind panic.

Lovely of you to take the time to reply xx

  • You're welcome xxx

You have enough to cope with and when the pain is under control you can concentrate on planning for the surgery xxx

  • Hi , glad you've had great advice and support already, just wanted to add some hugs and

wishes. Sorry you had such a horrible pre birthday non present in the form of your cancer diagnosis but good you've found your way here. I'm sure others will pop in with stories of their whopper lumps, my understanding is that even the smallest (some aggresive forms of breast cancer don't even show up as lumps at all) can be nasty little b******, so big isn't necessarily worse. Waiting for results and dates for treatments seems to be the most tortuous bit of this cancer poop, hope you can find nice things to do to take your mind of it all as much as possible till your op date.

Wishing you well and sending virtual hugs, HFxx

  • Dearest ,  I am sorry you have found yourself joinin this group, the group that none of us wanted to join.  You are in the right place, if you have any questions or worries ask away, there is always someone listening and can offer words of advice and help.  I've just wrote down the pain killers that Snowys Mum has mentioned, it is always good to know these things.

I know the coming weeks the wait will drive you mad.  Whilst I was waiting for my operation, due to my worries and concerns, my consultation put me on Letrozole, this was given as an adjuvant therapy, to treat and possible 'shrink' the BC along with minimising my worry of the risk of growth.

Dependant on age and operation most ladies are put on some form of adjuvant medications with the view of suppressing any secondaries, two of the main types of tablets are Tamoxifen (given to ladies that have not had the menopause) and Letrozole (given to ladies that are in or have gone through the menopause).

I wonder if you could ask your Consultant or Breast Care Nurse if they would consider, if it would be beneficial to you, to put you on letrozole whilst you are waiting for your operation?  It is worth asking.

Sending you 'Belated Happy Birthday Greetings'. - totally agree it was a rubbish present, I think after all this is over and you have got off this roller coaster of a ride, that you plan an extra special belated birthday treat.

    Offering you gently hugs xxxx

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x
