So having been diagnosed on 14th March and sent for scans I had my next meeting with the NHS consultant on 15th April to be told the good news that there were no signs of cancer anywhere else but I needed a mastectomy with full axillary node removal and reconstruction.

Here comes the rant - the NHS cannot operate until June earliest due to full lists and leave - totally unacceptable.

Thankfully I have private medical insurance but I have now been forced into the position of having to arrange my own surgery - properly hacked off.

I realise I am lucky to be in the position to do this and feel awful for others currently going through this at my local NHS unit who are being put through the asme delay but I really do not think this is right.

Anyway - rant over and thanks for listening.

You are right.  It’s not right.  It’s disgusting. xx

  • Sadly the NHS can’t accommodate demand. I was diagnosed 3rd June and surgery delayed to mid July as surgeon and radiographer both had holidays and needed to be there on same day as I needed guide wire inserted before op.  Just luck of timing!   Almost 4 years ago but I still remember the anxiety of waiting.

My hubby was ‘luckier’  with emergency surgery.  He had two tests and we were called for results on Weds to be met with ‘pre op tomorrow surgery next Tuesday ‘  .  No time to question why the rush etc.  He wasn’t so lucky in getting his surgery biopsy results though.  3 weeks later results sent to GP who refused to disclose them.  Said the consultant had to tell him.  Consultant on holiday for 2 weeks!!  Eventually the secretary got a registrar to ring and he had the good news of no cancer!  Why couldn’t his GP have told him as this added another day to his waiting!

  • , totally unacceptable. So glad you have Pvt insurance, but awful for others who cannot afford it. And , glad to hear the news was good, but why on earth could the GP not have told you? I would change GPs! Also unacceptable, Good luck.

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

    Hi Lisa,

Just saw your post, it is awful! I live in the Midlands & my daughter, aged 42. Saw her GP just over two weeks ago Easter Monday, went to a `one stop clinic` the next Monday.

Had a mammogram, scan, biopsy bloods etc. Results same Morning, Triple Negative breast cancer.

Having Titanium clip in this coming Wednesday. Then having chemo once every 3 weeks to shrink 11mm lump.

Wire to locate site of cancer before lumpectomy.

This is how it should be, surely Drs/surgeons know how stressful it is to wait. They must have other anaethatists!

What if he was ill for a long time,

As to results for your husband, the hospital involved phones direct to patient with results, it is then up to you if you hear them or wait until you see GP or DR.

Have you contacted PALS at your hospital?

    Good luck,

    Scilly.

    Hi lisa

id agree that the wait is unacceptable... lucky you having* health cover

i as my go on jan 2, saw the consultant and mammogram etc the same day being told told it was l8kely.. and if the tests confirmed I would be having an operation on feb 14... which was when I had right masectomy and lymph nodes out. I then started chemo on March 29 so aware that I seemingly moved quickly.. based in Leicestershire.

    Fingers crossed for you...

  • the hospital didn’t ring as they were discussed this Wednesday and then consultant went on holiday so emailed them to GP- only found out as my OH rant as he knew they were going to discussed at the MDT meeting.  Go refused to disclose and said ring hospital and ask for another consultant to give them.  Rang consultant secretary on Thursday and she had registrar ring with then.  Meanwhile in Thursdays mail he had appointment letter for August!

when I had biopsy last September st my 3 year mammogram I was told on Monday when they did biopsy I would have phone call Friday with results.  No call so at end of day I rang  and reason they hadn’t rung me was they wanted to sort out another appointment!  My biopsy was fine though they busted wanted to triple check which I guess is good but they could have told me biopsy result!!!
