Bone scan

Hi all,

Just finished my chemo and start radiotherapy soon for IDC following lumpectomy and axillary node clearance.   I had a full body scan a while ago, but not a bone scan.  I am due to have one on Thursday so that I can be included in a clinical trial.   I am worried sick about it and have told the trial nurse this.  She said it's purely a tick box and if my oncologist at the Christie had felt I needed one, I would have had one before now.

My husband died last May of lung ca at 50 yrs old,  2 months before I was diagnosed  and his bone scan showed mets.  I know it's totally different,  but I can't help worrying.

Just needed to get it out to people who understand the fear.

Thanks

Gail xx

  • Oh , how absolutely awful for you, no wonder you are worrying. Knowing that the Christie is a renowned centre of excellence, I think you can be reassured by what the trial nurse said. I understand completely though  the worry which will not go away. Big hugs, and keep posting xxx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

    Hi

I work in cancer clinical trials and would just like to reassure you that when you are invited to take part in a trial there are usually quite a few tests that need to be carried out in order to assess eligibility for taking part. Some of these tests will be over and above standard of care and specifically for the trial. As the trial nurse told you, they are effectively a tick box exercise to ensure that anyone taking part has the same or similar baseline and that there is nobody included that would skew the results of the trial. They are not an indication that there was anything missed by your oncologist. Please try not to worry and please make sure you talk to your trials nurse about your worries as she should be able to properly reassure you.

    Take care

    xx

    Hi Horsing Around,

Thankyou so much for your reply.  I have just read it and it couldn't have come at a better time as my bone scan is tomorrow and I'm lay here worrying.  As an ICU Matron, I see patients being consented for trials frequently and have tried to rationalise it all, but your voice of reason has been so great to hear.  I can't thank you enough for putting my mind at rest and helping me to get a night's sleep.

  • Hi pmess

can I please ask how the trial went? I can see you were grade 3 and in nodes (I assume as cleared them all) which is similar to my diagnoses- just looking for a bit of hope that grade 3 in nodes can work out ok?
