I am wondering if some of you will share with me and others what took you to your GP that finally led to your diagnosis? I have done a monthly examination of my breasts since I was 18 - now 37. There are so many other things to look out for as well though that if im honest, I never knew to check for. For example I was always led to believe that pain in the breast was ok. I never knew upper back pain could be related. So if you would like to share then please do.

Thank you.

  • Any particular reason Lily? Have you some symptoms that you are concerned about? Are you just trying to improve your breast care?

Please feel free to share as we can make some suggestions for you or signpost you to the help you may need

    I. like many woman, had my annual mammogram and they spotted the issues. That is on both occasions.

Now maybe people in the Under 50's group would have different stories to tell as for them mammograms are not available as a matter of course

I had a weird tingling in my breast that I had for a few days. I told myself that I would go to the doctor if it was still there on Monday.. It stopped but started again the following week

My GP couldn't find anything but referred me anyway, at the breast clinic they found areas of concern  Read my profile for the full story.

ANY changes should be investigated just in case.

  • I found a lump but thought I had another cyst.  When I went with my cyst, it took 3 visits over 2 years for them to finally send me.

When I went with this lump, they sent me straight away.

  • I’d seen a post of Facebook, a lady had wrote ‘not all breast cancers are lumps’ with a photograph of a tiny dimple.

Thankfully her words and image stayed in my mind.

One evening I was about to put my bra on, I lent forward and noticed (through the mirror) that my left breast had a tiny dimple on the outer side of my breast towards my arm pit.  The lady’s words and image came straight to my mind. ....

I told my husband and he said it’s probably nothing, I was going to leave things be, however her words kept going through my mind.  I mentioned it to my husband again, it started an argument with him saying if I’m going to keep on about it he’d take me to doctors there and then! So off we went, me saying they won’t see me etc. Receptionist was lovely and got me an appointment for the next day.

Next day my doctor looked and says all looks okay, however, because if the size of my boobs (large or polite word dense) best to go to Breast Clinic (fast track 2 week referral).

Now, did my doctor know and didn’t say to save me worrying or was it has she said ‘best to get it checked out’ - well either way I had my appointment and then came the diagnosis.

So, not all BC are lumps - they can be dimples too....

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x

I definitely think all women should be made aware of all signs and symptoms which can be breast cancer. To much focus on just searching for a lump.

Im glad you saw this and I’m glad you went.

    How are things now?

I am anxiously awaiting results, however, I just feel women need to know about all signs and symptoms as focus is always on lumps

Thank you all for the replies.

  • Hi coppafeel / know your lemons are great resources. And give demos and examples on what to look for. I had a lump near the nipple. But... Prior to that and itchy nipple (thought I just needed a new bra), and some tingling. I could have noticed it before I did if I'd known better. X

First symptom I had I ignored, very small amount of blood from the nipple, the reason I ignored it was that I had removed a nipple piercing that was still healing. The symptom I went to the doctor with was a dimple (and I subsequently found a hard flat area) which I later found out was normal tissue being pushed up by the tumour, I never felt the lump.

I was too young to be getting mammograms (37) so it was only ever going to be down to me finding it myself. I have no family history so it wasn’t on my radar, the dimpling was something I’d seen on a Facebook post, if I’d not seen that I doubt I’d have gone to see my doctor.

I had a pain where my heart is, I'd been having tachycardia, so went to have my heart checked out and had nothing.

    FF a year or more.

It was breast cancer, I found out during a chance routine check up. I didn't connect the dots, heart is breast area, stupid of me really, but unforgivable in terms of the doctors I'd seen in the meantime.

No lump, nothing on the mammogram. Fortunately I had an ultrasound with an excellent doctor - one who finally knew what he was doing - he found the lump and got me a biopsy.

So, check out anything that worries you in the whole torso area. Get a second opinion, or third. If it's worrying you it's important.
