It seems I'm a patient now!

But not a very patient one!

I've at least got a diagnosis, it's invasive ductal cancer grade 2, but still small, oestrogen receptive but looks as if I might get away with the lymph nodes....and maybe not too much treatment afterwards?

Complex plan, but to begin with, a sentinel node (plus another one or so) removal as day surgery, (a nuclear medicine visit first to get 'the jab' for them to trace) then a gap while that,  plus the HER result come back, then because of my previous surgeries for cysts and the fact one resulted in a massive haematoma, therefore scar tissue, I will have a complete mastectomy with an implant. That will be immediately after Easter.

By finding out as much as possible beforehand, the surgeon hopes to prevent too many operations. Obviously I will then need Tamoxifen or similar, so will appreciate helpful advice about that.

But I'd be interested on anyone's 'take' on her plan. I feel reassured that she took time with me, and the BC nurse afterwards spent a good while too.

  • Our community matron spent a while with us all, she took a few notes and will push for CHC funding for care for hubs, as she too thinks it’s time.
we have a quandary about hospital bed, as to whether there’s enough room lengthwise, I phoned the loan supplier to ask about sizes but as I wasn’t a health care professional they wouldn’t deal with me but did say there were different sizes. So while our matron was here we measured, and she will see if she can organise it.
she too was sad to see him as he is now, she’s a lovely person who was instrumental in getting him involved in setting up the PPG (patient participation group) as one of the first in the area. He was chairman and secretary for a good few years. Then with my knowledge of blood cancer problems (my profile tells you) she asked if I would join too.
she left a short while before daughter did, daughter is off to a funeral celebration of the lovely man who was head of our local music centre while our two were at school and doing such a lot of music. Because of her immune problems she won’t put herself at risk.

  • Things certainly seem to be moving quickly for you all, you’re often in my thoughts and you’re doing a great job, hope today is a good day x lots of love x

  • Today is daughter’s 10th Re-Birthday, 10 years since that worrying time at the Christie Hospital when she was given cells from Thomas and we waited to see if it would work. Thank you Thomas and also to Anthony Nolan Trust who helped find him!

  • CHC funding applied for, should have 4x daily care in place within 72 hours. Psychologist coming tomorrow afternoon to talk to us both, separately and together.
D/N coming hopefully to deal with Conveen problems. I think an in dwelling catheter is needed now.

Ive managed to get him washed, pressure areas given a good rub and barrier cream applied in case, changed and the bedding all changed and washing machine is now busy.

  • @moomy, I do hope you get the care in place very soon. How ridiculous that the bed loaners would not talk to you, stupid beaurocracy. You are doing such a wonderful job caring for your hubs. Sending hugs xxx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • District nurse came out, looked at existing bed and reassured us that a hospital one will fit, she will get that plus pressure relief mattress organised, and will check with GP but assuming all is straightforward, will fit a catheter in place later today.

He’s now sleeping for a bit having had a very rapid trip to the loo! (laxido working almost too well!?!)

  • I hope the new bed gets there fast and I hope the psychologist appointment goes smoothly and is helpful xx

  • It wasn’t easy, bless him, (prostate enlargement) but a catheter is now in place and fingers firmly crossed that it will help, stay unblocked snd he has no infection. Each Tuesday I will be changing the leg bag, but know how to empty and deal with night bag anyway.

Son is coming tonight to be company and make sure I’m ok, as well as seeing hubs.

Hubs suddenly decided he’d quite like some chocolate, please, so I popped to the local shop and bought him some. Luckily they are gearing up for the ‘C’ time although it’s only September snd so there was a bit of choice.

  • Hope it goes well moomy....

Dad has only just started having problems with frequent infections after nearly 4 years. I think his prostate is very enlarged now. Like you I changed the leg bag weekly during visits. It's ok and very straight forward. I had to change the bag from day to night daily as I suspect will you. We found the night bag stayed in place best if we hooked it on the bed base because it got much heavier than the day bag. ......Not getting up in the night really helped Dad.
